I will be getting my new piggie this week! A friend of a friend has to re-home her boar because her son is allergic to him and her dog is pestering him . I have no idea where to start though! Do guinea pigs play with toys? What toys will i buy him? Hes a year old and by himself, id like to get him a friend but how do i go about bonding? Obviously he will have to be neutered but I'm a bit scared about it.... Is it best just to leave him by himself now? Hes indoor but i have three rabbits in my room atm until the wendy house and run is up for them so i cant fit anymore furrys in there. Will he be ok in the hutch with a heat pad and lots of blankets, straw and hay? Hes used to going out in a run in the garden. What type of food is best? I dont like feeding my rabbits excel because it doesnt agree with them but is the guinea food ok?
Stupid questions i know but I'm more of a bunny pro! Hopefully will be a piggie pro soon :)) Any more tips i havnt covered is very welcome :<>
 
hi good on you for taking him in :) you dont need to get him neutered unless he's going to be living with a girl :) cardboard boxes are good fun for them and toilet rolls tuffed with hay. please dont use straw only hay there is a reason but i cant remember what it is mallethead. whereabouts do * live? the weather is a factor on being outdoors but i think this time of year as long as the night temperature doesnt drop to much he should be ok outside. any other questions just ask :)

The best way of finding your boy a friend is by ringing up any rescues within your reach and finding one that allows to bring your boy to "boar date" suitable candidates under expert supervision and make his own choice. If he is a laidback character, you can try and bond him with another laidback adult boar, otherwise you might wish to pair him with a very young boy. Please make sure that your boy is healthy and hasn't got mites or ringworm first; the rescue will greatful! boars are generally better just in pairs; you need a laidback group for a stable trio.

Otherwise, you can think about having him neutered and after a wait of 4-6 weeks, you can introduce him to 1-2 sows. Cross gender pairings are usually more stable, but you have the risk and the cost of the operation - perhaps you can get a good and experienced vet recommended from the rescue; that cuts down a lot on any problems.

Neutering doesn't change a boar's behaviour, unlike with rabbits.

Oh i didnt know that :) I will be rescuing another guinea pig, theres a rescue an hour or so away from me so when i get him ill give them a call :)
