Exercise time on carpet?

Hi there

I'm in the middle of preparing for acquiring 2 pigs to join me in my little flat. Re: exercise time, my flat is carpeted throughout, and I am aware that gps aren't the easiest to toilet train. What have others done re: resolivng the issue of gps relieving themselves on carpet. I have heard that some gps can be toilet trained, but failing that I have been considering different options for protecting my carpets, including putting a pvc backed travelling rug down, or an oilskin table cloth, or a canvas undersheet. I've already purchased from a garden centre durable plastic lawn edging (9.1m X 16.5cm) which I thought would provide a crafty wee border for the gps' exercise yard. Ideally I would love them to have the run of the whole flat, although have still to gp proof it.

Indoors I use the PVC backed travel rug on my carpeted areas, works vey well.

I put pvc tablecloth (sold by the metre at places like Dunelm Mill) down in areas where the guinea pigs tend to settle, then put a fleece blanket on top. They prefer to sit in corners, behind furniture or under chairs so this is where they tend to pee. I put a big piece down to protect an area in the middle of the floor and put tubes/ boxes with a fleece draped over the top.
My guinea pigs get floor time every day and there's only ever been a couple of pees on the carpet. The girls tend to also poop in the protected places although the boys will poop anywhere rolleyes. Luckily piggy poops are easy to hoover. My main group can go in and out of their cage set up when they have floor time and they do tend to go back in there to pee as well.
