Any advice? I am going to see and hopefully bring home my first guineapig on Thursday! She will live indoors in a C&C wire mesh pen 2x4 grids and I'm intending to cover area with incontinence pads and fleece. That seems to be what most people do (advice on that greatly received too please!) Just wondering - should I only put them out on really good days and bring them in if I'm going out? They will have shelter of course. She will be getting a husband but not until the shelter lets him go! He has to be neutered yet!

Yeah that sounds best for indoor pigs, because they wouldn't be used to the cold, same as we would get cold being out all day really. :) And if you're going out it might rain or get cold, so best to bring them in again.

I love guinea pigs being outdoors in the fresh air, but I do think indoor ones could get cold easily.

I caught up... sorry I should read things, I was just so excited you said she! :)).

At first mine only went out for 30 minutes at a time, now they get an hour but its always supervised. Inco pads is what I use works wonders :).

Were did the madam come from?! Do tell :)!

If you're putting her out on grass I think you need to introduce it in short periods until she's used to the rich grass. :)

Oh right. Like rabbits then. I'll see what she gets at the min. She is 10 months old and the breeder is letting me have her because he says he has left it too late to breed from her and she's too old now. He would just keep her but as he spoke to someone who reccommend me as a good mummy he is prepared to let me have her! So I'm not sure how he keeps his piggies. Will see on Thursday when I go to meet her! :))

too old to breed at 10 months?! My boys live indoors but I let them in the run outside when the weather is nice, maybe cut some grass and feed it to her indoors to get her used to it before she gets to eat as much as she wants! Just ensure to feed it freshly trimmed with scissors

I know! I don't understand either but I think it has something to do with her never having babies before - she is too old for a first litter?

Be careful, this is discussing breeding to a degree you might get in trouble.

I have heard there pelvic bones fuse together at 10 months making it dangerous.

Back on topic so grass outside?!

Oooh! Sorry! New to this!

Yes, the grass thing - can the piggies exercise on grass where the bunnies have been. I've heard that rabbits can pass on something that can kill piggies. If it would be safer I could keep piggies confined to a certain area and get them some roll out turf that Benson and Lola (the buns) cant get to? The only thing about that would be that they would get much less space and most free ranging would then be in the hall and kitchen each night. Really don't know how to do the outdoor accomodation thing. Don't want to keep them cooped up inside if they'd rather be out. Or are they happy in and just an hour or so out? I'm confused!

Well mine are indoor pigs and only get out at the weekend but quite often or not the outdoors comes to them and they get grass and dandelions that I pick :)!

I don't know if it's good to put them out where rabbits have been but I do it all the time with no problems. Maybe someone will have more info on it though?

I'd put them out for a few hours during the nicest part of the day (unless it's really hot then probably in the morning or evening) because it'd be healthy for them :)

just wondered how long I should leave my outside guinea pigs in their run for - on grass, shaded area, and water.

I know things have changed alot and it may be frowned upon not, but when I used to keep piggies and rabbits years ago, they were all let out for most of the day and had the whole run of the garden (when the weather was nice obviously!) They were all kept in hutches outdoors.I'd open all the front doors of the hutches in the morning then they could come and go as they pleased during the day, then we'd lock them in before dark. Nothing better than seeing tham have all that space to explore and have fun in!

When I had a yard my (mostly indoor) guineas would spend almost every mild summer's day outside, from the morning until the evening. I had a safe and covered hutch and I'd put a water bottle and food bowl in there. I used to cover the hutch from the sun and put in a few hideys for them. They were always very reluctant to come back in at the end of the day! They used to get free range inside most of the time so going outside wasn't for exercise so much, it was just for the grazing, fresh air and outside noises, guineas really love that.:)

I usually put mine out for a half a day (at least) - they are used to it.

I make sure they have shelter / shade and water and I leave them out even if I am out. My garden is totally enclosed and you can't get in it from the street, not that that matters I suppose as they are in the (cat proof) run. But it does mean no one can get in my garden and take them.

Well I've got them now and I think they would like to see the great outdoors - on a nice day of course. Need to get them an outdoor hutch for nice days now.:))

Thank you all! this has re-assured me, left my piggies out in their covered run for about 3 hrs this aft and they seemed so chilled out when I brought them back in! another question tho do any of you supliment their diet with vit c tabs, drops e.t.c ?
