Hi,
A couple minutes ago, my two guinea pigs were being chased around our garden by a cat. My Dad was the only one to see it, only for a few seconds. They were hiding under a large umbrella for a few seconds until we saw that one guinea pig had one of her eyes bulging out of its socket. The normal pupil was slightly to the back, it is red and it looks blood shot. It’s so red it looks almost black. It is slightly watering and she seems tilting her head and trying to scratch it. We are guessing that she bumped into something. I'm terrified. PLEASE, any feedback will be appreciated :ple: xx

Sorry there is nothing we can do to help. Your piggy needs a vet, the eyes can deteriorate quickly and need prompt treatment if it is going to heal. It's possible she could have bumped into something but if the cat got near it could have scratched her eye. I hope you can get her seen today.

In future, now you know there is a predator, please ensure your pigs are only out in a secure run and not free roaming as this cat will be back for another try and might be more successful next time

We are considering putting them in a large, fully enclosed cage from now on, thank you for your advice. We will get her to a vet soon

Best of luck with it and hopefully with the right treatment it will heal quickly. I had a piggy with what I assume was hay poke (small scratch to the eye) quite recently the eye clouded over and the vet said there was some inflammation so I was given eye drops and it cleared up within a few days.

Please see a vet as soon as possible today! The sooner she is getting treatment, the higher the chance that it can be healed medically. Eye injuries deteriorate very quickly; they cannot wait!

Please never not let your guinea pigs roam unattended in your garden and make sure that any run is completely predator proof. This includes cats as well as birds of prey, foxes or rats. It takes only seconds - I know that from my own experience when a neighbour's dog managed to wiggle underneath a badly maintained fence panel of their sand killed childhood piggies of ours in what we supposed was a safe run with a lid in an enclosed garden. Once a predator knows that there is prey, they will keep coming back! :(

We have bought a fully enclosed cage for outdoors and will even be watching them for extra care. Sadly our guinea pig has to get her eye removed, according to the doctors as the infection has escalated. Thank you anyway, this has helped a lot.

That has happened to us aswell! Thankfully we got the hay out aswell and some eye drops helped this. Also, we have taken her to the vet; they said her eye has to be removed, hopefully she will be the same guinea pig before surgery as she will be after :D

Oh no! Sorry to hear that. A few members on here have had piggies have eyes removed and they generally adapt really well so fingers crossed

Ive had pigs that have needed eyes removed ! seems to be a horrible thing to happen but adapt very quickly

Here are our post-op care tips. Please keep both guinea pigs together as much as possible, but bring them indoors. Take the time to read these guides, so you are prepared to step in.
It is absolutely vital to keep a guinea pig's guts going if they stop eating as a reaction to anaesthetic drugs and/or antibiotics. Your care in that respect can really make all the difference between life and death!

All the best! Guinea pigs adjust well to the loss of an eye. What they usually hate is be approached from their blind side. Please make sure that you make your presence known with an audible cue before you touch a guinea pig from its blind side.

Please also make sure that your hutch is ideally under cover and well insulated during the winter months. Guinea pigs are not hardy the way rabbits are. This includes any flaps - we have come across cases where piggies have died from cold because they had been left open.

Please don't let them in open spaces unless constantly supervised and even in a cage outdoors they should be supervised ideally unless fox and predator proof. What a poor girl it must be very sore. If it was me I would be at the vets even if it had to be out of hours as she could be in quite a lot of pain and I don't think we drops will be sufficient for that sort of injury. Hope she does recover x
