Hello, I have just joined the forum but have been looking at posts educationally for a while now.

My problem is that I believe my guinea pig is suffering from bloat. Last night she ate her usual portion of veggies before going to sleep, no symptoms other than a little less energy than usual.
This morning we awoke to her being bloated and barely moving. This morning we were able to feed her four small leaves before she stopped eating, this was the last time she ate ( around lunchtime). Throughout the day she has stopped eating and now squeaks slightly when rearranging. Have just been giving her cuddles and allowing her to sit with us. Managed to syringe feed her a small amount of water and paste made from her nuggets, as well as gently massaging her and doing what I can to vibrate her ( I anxiously move my feet resulting in gentle vibrations up my leg).
We have not been able to contact a vet as they are not open on Sundays. They open in eight and a half hours.
Please help!

Morning. I hope you manage to get in at the vets this morning. Hope piggy is ok.

I was thinking of you and your piggy and hope you managed to be seen by a vet.
Bloat can be very sudden onset and does seem to happen at the most inconvenient times, but all vet practices should have an answer phone message with out of hours contact details for an emergency vet.

Hope you managed to get your piggy to the emergency vet?
How is she doing?

Unfortunately she passed away not long after my initial post. We sat and comforted her the whole time, hopefully she’s in a better place.
I’m not really sure what else I could’ve done in the time I had, wish I could have taken her to a professional in time

BIG HUGS
I am very sorry for your loss.

Please be aware that your chances of saving her were very slim, whichever vet was seeing her; there is only so much they can do. Severe bloat is a killer disease, as is a twisted gut or a blockage (the latter two are nearly always fatal). I have lost several piggies to severe bloat and related issues over the years.

Please do not feel like you have failed her in any way. You were just very unlucky in coming up against one of the least easily treatable problems a piggy can come up. If it is that fast and severe, then there is nothing you or a vet can really do. After the first wave woulld have come another, and another - any of them as devastating or worse than the first one. :(
You can find the relevant information in our bloating guide, which has been linked above if you feel that it would help you deal with your feeling of guilt and failure, which are characteristic for the onset of the grieving process and which any loving owner has.

She has had your love and care, and that would have meant a lot.

You may find the information and practical tips in the guides via this link here helpful: Death, Dying, Terminal Illness, Grieving and Bereaved Companions: Information and Support for Owners and Their Children

I am so sorry for your loss.
Having lost a piggy to bloat I fully understand how quickly it can come on and turn serious.
Even though we did get Lucy to the vet, there was simply nothing that could be done to save her.
Be kind to yourself.
It is clear you loved your piggy very much and did everything possible for her.

I’m sorry for your loss. Take care of yourself and please keep telling yourself you did the very best you could.
