I'd like to give a simple warning to anybody before they read this.
This story isn't too pleasant, and for myself, quite upsetting.
Due to the nature of this post, I'm sorry for any incorrect thread placement.

Unfortunatly, I woke up this morning and my beloved Ziggy had passed away, not long after his first birthday. Since birth he's suffered a range of illnesses, and was particularly prone to chest infections, and as a result, was suffering from very laboured breathing. ):
He'd recently been recovering from pneumonia, although after several trips to the vets, I was told his lungs were unlikely to get better, and was given Baytril to dilute into his water. Sadly, this wasn't enough for the poor thing, and he passed away during the night.

My main issue is more about what happened afterwards.
He was sharing his home with his friend Rufio, in what I consider to be a reasonably large hutch. The pair got on well. However, I was incredibly more downheartened to find that it seems as though Rufio had bitten Ziggy's accessible ear clean off..
My question (more so to put my mind to rest) is why anybody thinks this was done? I've put it down to him being upset of his friend's death, but somebody here may be better informed of such behaviour.

Any responses and suggestions would be greatly appretiated.
Ziggy has now been lovingly buried, and is resting in piece. <3

I really hope someone is able to shed some light on this for you but I just wanted to say that I'm very sorry to hear about Ziggy. I can only imagine how devastating finding him like that must have been. RIP wee one.

aww poor little love. I'm not sure, maybe distress? guinea pig psychology is not my expertise, I'm sure somebody could be more helpful. RIP

OMG i'm so sorry to hear about dear little Ziggy going to the bridge 8...8...8...
RIP Ziggy run free at the bridge, popcorn thru the lush green meadows and enjoy munching on dandelions and clover, you'll be sadly missed but NEVER forgotten by your mummy and mate Rufio xxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxx
((((((((((((((((((HUGS))))))))))))))))))))))))) and lots of loves from us all xxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxx
Another little star now twinkling in the sky ............ :(

I can only assume the same as piglet_and_rogers_mama :(
HUGS for you and some little cuddles for Rufio i'm sure he's very upset :(

Thanks everybody so much for the support!
I really appretiate it.

The suggestions of distress really do seem to be all I can relate to what was going through poor Rufio's mind.

Thought I'd bump this up for you to see if anyone else had any suggestions.

I'm very sorry for your loss.

I wonder whether Rufio was trying to make Ziggy wake up and perhaps the earloss is due to intense grooming or pulling at him in his efforts. I have read about mum's damaging the ears of baby piggies by over enthusiastic grooming.

Goodnight Ziggy. :rose

I'm wondering whether its the same as i was told with gerbils, and what happened with my gerbil brothers. when one passes, the other will try to wake it and nibble at ears/toes/tail etc to try to get a response. when it doesnt it leaves it alone. maybe your sad guy was just trying to wake up his friend.

when one of our male gerbils had to be pts, we decided to show his body to his brother who was avidly searching for his brother. we put his little body in the cage and his brother ran to him, sniffed him all over, cleaned his face and then nibbled his ears and a front foot. only little nips, once he sat and watched for a few seconds he snuffled his fur on his neck and then went and got something to eat and seemed completely disinterested in him again so we took him out and buried him.

was very distressing to watch, they had been together 4 years. it did however seem to put his mind to rest, as once we removed his body he didnt carry on his hectic search around the tank.

Once again, thanks to everybody. It's nice to hear some other opinions, even if we all do reckon it's the same thing.

I sat and cuddled with Rufio yesterday and he does definatly seem to be aware of what's happened, so what he did, he obviously needed to do.
He's always been the more timid pig, and without Ziggy his confidence has faultered, but i'm almost certain with a lot of love he'll improve.
For now, I'm spending all the time with him I can.

Thankyou again for so much support! x

Thought I'd show you guys some pictures for all your support.
These were taken about a week ago before he started to deteriate. <3
