Temperatures well over 30 C are forecast for Southeast England tomorrow and for many parts of England on Thursday.

Please bring your guinea pigs indoors into the coolest room and keep all windows and the curtains closed during the hottest hours of the day!

More information on heat care and heat stroke in guinea pigs in this guide here. Please read and save lives!
Hot weather management and heat strokes

Almost time to be getting the windows and curtains closed everyone! Hopefully you're all getting a nice breeze at the moment to cool things down!

I'm in North England. Should I keep mine in?

It was 108 where I live today. I believe that's 42 in Celsius.

We relocated from Florida to NY after Hurricane Irma in Sept last year. Could never get used to the heat of FL and humidity. Had the ac on all day but were trapped for going outside in the heat-can still feel that horrible feeling. Migraines just wouldn't go away-even with a/c. First summer in Ny and don't miss one thing from FL-heat being first. Hurricane season and running every year second! Never got used to either of those.

I didn't know Cal. got so hot. Hoping humidity isn't so bad.

We hit about a week total these past two months of the same surprise here in NY. I didn't have a/c at the time yet but used fans and what i call 'coolies'-ice squares or bottles wrapped in towel or fleece then put in areas of the cage the babies lounged. We had thought about taking them to the basement but ended up buying one window ac and putting it in the family room where the largest cavy cage is. It was between the hours of 12pm or so and all the way into the night for us. Not much of a break when it happened.
I know there's an area here for this situation and the best care. I definitely would watch them but mine did get to where they lounged on each of their coolies; they were the size of small lunch boxes and cost maybe a dollar each but just the right size for the babies to each have one. It wasn't a pleasant day for any of us but everyone was fine with the right care. Lots of water-they will drink it. Fill it often and if you have more then one bottle, keep all full.

Hi! Please read the guide at the top so you can make an informed judgement of your own. The guide is very clear and detailed to allow any body around the world to care for the piggies adequately.

Piggies in generally warmer climates have the same problems with more extreme heat spikes that we are currently experiencing in the UK with our moderate climate. if in doubt, err on the side of caution.

We are on lock down now. Everyone is in, doors and windows are shut, blinds/curtains closed and the fans on. So far we aren't too bad inside.

We had a short 2 minute shower this morning while I was changing for a vet appointment and my hub closed only the windows and doors on one side of the house (instead of ALL of them as instructed), so while it is not yet hot, it is VERY sticky, especially in the piggy room! ARRGGGG!
Well, he'll have to live with a VERY grumpy wife feeling rather out of sorts and may have to carry the heavy air conditioning unit back downstairs if the piggies are starting to suffer.

We have all curtains closed but have to have one window slightly open so that the air con hose can vent out the window. Luckily the room does not get the sun until late afternoon and that is when the air con will come on. Will still sit here at work and worry all day though.

It's a dry climate over here so it's just really hot. We also had multiple grass fires yesterday, so it made it even worse...

My husband bought us a new air conditioner earlier in the heatwave so with the older ones we can keep the house comfortable.
It’s been a real blessing.
I’m using a small fan in the piggies’ room when I’m in. This is one advantage of working from home.
Even with the fan and 3 ice packs in the cage the girls are sleeping more and moving less.

It happened exactly this way with us as well. The first week in June had a couple days of heat advisories were at about 33 degrees celsius. Luckily at that time, it was only about 4 hours at peak and we had a/c's but were still re-wiring our newly purchased home. Was a sticky day but with coolies, fans and a bit cooler part of the house for the way it faces, it went ok. Layed down a lot more but drank a lot and all was well.

Next time was about a week at the beginning of July and it got hubby to figure out the wiring fast for downstairs. In the upstairs we had added an a/c unit so we brought smaller cages for some hours up there with the babies all over the room. The next day, they said will go on and won't get a break overnight so I hauled the ac downstairs myself; arthritis and all, and got it in the window for the family room. My son helped out near the end of the stairs lol. I went the next day to Ollies here and got a full cast off thermal curtain with grommets, a large curtain rod and hubby and I added this to the large dining room entrance (we changed our rooms around for the guinea pigs. The front living room is half living room, half dining room and no tv while the dining room is converted to a family room with couch, cavy cage on one half and tv). The kitchen is open in a narrow doorway but this really kept the room cool. No more moving them around.

I hope all are safe and sound there through the discomfort. Fall is around the corner.
