Pearl and Zip
Teenage Guinea Pig
In noticed Pearl has some eye crust. Is this normal? She is on antibiotics for a breathing problem, and 4 years old. You can’t really see it in the photo, but it’s on the lower part of her eye. It is her left eye only.

Thank you!Hi!
Take a deep breath; it looks like your piggy has had a tiny bit of dust or hay washed out of the eye, nothing worse!
There are three different types of eye crusts:
- transparent: indicate that there has been an irritation in the eye that has triggered some watery fluid.
See a vet promptly, if a piggy has got a runny eye that doesn't stop quickly - it could be the sign that something is wedged under a lid or there has been a non-ulcerating injury.
- milky white: eye cleaning fluid that has not drained away fully; nothing to worry
- thick green or yellow: symptom of a bacterial infection in the respiratory tract. You need to see a vet promptly for antibiotics and ideally something that helps to thin and drain the mucus in the airways to help free them up as quickly as possible. The need to eat comes behind the need to breathe and the need to drink, so struggling to breathe means that your guinea pig will eat less or loose its appetite and you may need to step in with fibrous support care. Weigh any piggy that is not well daily at the same time, instead of weekly and step in as soon as it loses over 50g (ca. 1 1/2 oz).
You won't need this in your case, but you may want to have a look at it, so you know what to do when you are dealing with a serious illness and can prepare for it.
