Hey all,

I was looking at my Harvey and he has the TINIEST amount of eye crusties under his eye, is a little bit normal or should he get to the vet? I just can't keep affording check up bills if it's normal, I just paid a hefty one for my baby Mel 2 days ago, so I don't really want to rush back if a little bit is normal.

Is the crust transparent (i.e. water fluid from a small irritation, like a spec of hay dust), thick white (eye cleaning fluid) or thick yellow/green (mucus from a URI)? The first two are nothing whatsoever to worry about.

Please have a look at this guide here. It tells you what is normal and what not: Guinea pig body quirks

Any signs of sneezing? etc? Have you gently and carefully removed it and it come back?

Those little crusts are whiteish and therefore not to worry about. It is just a little bit of eye cleaning fluid which has not gone down the tear duct. ;)
thanks Wiebke x

Only 1 sneeze the other day but he also just got handed hay with kind of the dusty bits and I had put it in his little house cuz he's so sketchy right now, I didn't want to stress him out more and wanted him to eat so I placed it in there, I feel like it was just because it was dusty but am also watching out for coughing and what not. There's no fluid in his eyes, like any discharge, just old crusties. I'll get a picture if I can when I get home, I'll weigh him and try and snap a pic without freaking him out too much. I'm so on edge as I just had a piggie pass I can't have another go. Everything is panicking me right now.

Also, I've not removed it yet in case I had to take him to the vet to get it checked out. If I find out it's normal I'll gently remove it tonight

I’ve checked Harv out and the crusties are no longer there, he must’ve wiped them off. so this is normal for piggies? He is 987g, looks great, he’s taking his friend dying fine, he’s eating great and being tamed well and fast. Id say he looks great... hope the eye crusts are all good!

That looks okay... thick discharge where the eye is gunked up underneath is what you want to watch for. Leela gets a lot of crusts around her eyes for some reason... I honestly wonder if her sinuses/tear ducts are not quite right. She sneezes a lot too, although she has been checked out by the vet for both issues. I would keep an eye on any other symptoms, but not panic!
