Anyone got any hard earned eye drop administering tips?

I seem to be incredibly gifted at administering eye drops to the side of Casran's face but not so skilled at actually getting any in his eye!

Casran thinks this is the best thing ever as his useless mummy is using grapes as a distraction method.

Really want this to work because if his eye isn't any better Thursday they are going to perform an eye abrasion - sad face!

How do you do it currently? Try holding his eye open, keeping his head still. drop it in the corner and open his eye wider, and open and close it straight away to spread the drop around his eye for him.

I have to give one of my girls eye drops twice daily..for the rest of her life, I have also had several with eye poke etc... so we have got used to it. I will try to explain how I do it.

Firstly, you need to be the boss and dont take any nonsense. they may be small but they can be very bossy and feisty and they need to know that this wont work!

Secondly, I hold her on a surface at just about waist height (I stand up and a table top may work for you?) put him on something he feels secure on and wont slip, he wont panic then.

Then hold him firmly against your tummy/waist with the eye to be treated the nearest to your body. With your outside hand put your finger/s on top of his head just on his forehead, gently (to prevent head going up). The finger on the head is really there as a guide, if you press too hard he will put his head up, so just be gentle. Its just to say,'keep your head still please'.

With your thumb (on the same hand) gently pull the upper eye lid up. Then drop the drop into the eye. I made the mistake of putting the nostle/dropper too close to the eye which did'nt help. Now I hold it a little higher and let the drop fall onto the eye ball. I found I panicked otherwise about the eye ball hitting the dropper! Then close the eye gently.

Its easier said than done but my girl no longer complains, she occasionally tries but I just hold her firmly and say No and she gives up instantly. I treat afterwards helps a lot too! Now I am used to it the others dont ever flinch. You just have to be confident otherwise they sense you getting nervous and will fidget. I describe the piggy agaist your body as the 'piggy headlock'! its not really but I find you have much more control and leverage.

Hope that helps! Just ask if its not clear, its hard to put in words to the process but this is what I find works for me.

We use a similar method to Guinea Slave and rub the corner of the eye afterwards so the drops stay in. Must admit that the OH is much better at it than me.

Oh gosh thanks @Piggly - at the moment I just take aim, squeeze hard and hope some of the splatter hits the target. I wish vets would give demos.

And @sport_billy - as always, wanting to help! You're the best.

Okay. So taking everyone's advice into account everything went better this time but now he's sat looking at me like I've set his soul on fire and no one loves him, and I'm sat crying and he's nibbling my hand and this sucks!

It is not easy giving them eye drops as they hate it and seem to close their eyes. It sounds like you are doing a good job though. I know he is unhappy with you but you are doing this because you love and care for him.

Poor you. He WILL get used to it. It's a few seconds of discomfort to save his sight, I often say to Lacey... It's this or lose your eye, your decision? It helps you to keep focus too :/)

Btw I got the fingers wrong...after I did her tonight I realised I my outside fingers on her cheek (furthest away from you to stop sideways movement and my thumb gently on her head which also opens the eyelid. Hope that's clear! If you still struggle I will see if I can get someone to take a video, it's hard to explain!

Hiya, I will see if we can do one tomorrow evening if that's ok? She has had her drops tonight. If I can convince husband to get up slightly earlier before we go to work tomorrow morning I will do that. Hope that's ok? I could pretend but I think it'll irritate her...she is a very sensitive soul!
