Just curious for some opinions...
Especially from a medical back ground...

Evie had her eye removed... And 10 days after op a small infection was spotted so the eye was cleaned... I assumed her eye would be cleaned a d sewn back up and a drain fitted... But the vet decided to leave her eye open... So you could see the internal stitches and the pad of the eye...

I was bathing the eye twice a day and it had finally healed up... It has taken a while...
But what I noticed is that there was no margins cut for the eye lids to heal together and subsequent to this her eye has healed with her eye lids in a 'open' position...

Having never had to have an eye left like this I'm a bit puzzled by it all...
Should I be asking for another op. To close the eye as I'm concerned about how thick the actual scar tissue is... To protect from hay pokes etc...
Or is it okay as it's left...
I'll add some photos so you can see what I'm on about...
See how it appears to be caved in...?

Just a question out of curiosity rather than concern at this point in time and I would love to hear people thoughts on it...
Thanks

That sounds so strange. Surely it can get infected left like this? I do not understand? When Marble had her eye removed it was all sewn up.:{

Her eye was sewn up but was opened up to flush out an infection... But they didn't sew it back up they left it open instead... I've never heard of it being done like this... ?/

I have not heard of this. I thought they would always sew it up so it heals and the fur grows over it. Have you thought of calling another vet and asking their opinion?

That is not normal procedure for eye removal at all, pieces of the eyelid are usually cut and stitched over the gap, why did they leave it open? Its going to risk infection more? Unless I'm missing something this isnt the way enucleations are done at all!? I drain is sometimes placed in the socket but it is always stitched shut. I would get a second opinion asap about this, doesnt look to be healing well.

So sorry this hasnt gone as it should. Poor little one. :(

Looked nasty :( I have seen this but can't remember what animal lol mallethead Think it was a cat. The scar tissue thickens over time and I *think* that as the eye socket is now clear of the eyeball and anything to do with it there;s no nerve endings or owt so it doesn't cause any discomfort. I think.
Maybe if they sew it up completely it can become a bit tight?
Not 100% but I supose there's different methods for everything and maybe not every technique is suitable for every pig? Sorry, stabbing in the dark here!

Sillyme, just re read the posts, trust me to not listen, it wouldhave needed to stay open to drain any infection, but it will need sowing back up at some point.

Thankyou..!
When I picked her up from the vets... And got her home to check her over that's when I noticed they had left it open... I phoned saying I was expecting to see her eye stitched shut with a drain in and expressing my concern about the fact that there was no margins cut in the eye for the lids to seal together and I got the usual reply... I was even told that they didn't make drains small enough to fit in a pigs eye... mallethead which is obviously cr*p...
It's been an up hill struggle with her and alot of improvisation on my part... I upped her dose of Baytril to 0.85 daily to try and keep her infection under controll... She was originally dosed at .4 daily...
She's been in so much pain with this... And I would keep taking her back there I have seen a handful of vets... All of which would clean her eye removing any superficial scabs and leaving it raw and bleeding again... If I'm honest I'm supprised she's survived...

Dont worrie I am already in the process if moving... Just checking out some of the vets before I commit to them...

I'm not happy either... Havent been for a while now...
I won't go in to too much detail on here as I don't want to sound like I'm sl*gging them off publicly... And they are very good at alot of things aswell... Especially dentals...
This with Evie and the total mess that was coco was enough for me... mallethead

I hope you find a much better piggie friendly practice for your lovelies. I'm so sorry you have had such a bad service from your vets, its not acceptable for practices to be so bad, but i wont rant either. lol.
