Hi people

iv noticed this past 2 weeks, davids eye has been producing excessive cleaning fluid (that milky like substance), it doesnt look shut or anything just a bit more watery than normal. i can see that fluid on it one minute, then the next minute its not there. Theres no other symptoms. I'm wondering whether to get some optrex infected eyes or whether just go bathe it and keep my eye on it for now.

Does anyone know what could this be thats causing this or could it be an infection? I'm holding off taking him to the vets because the eye actually looks normal apart from everynow and then when its got excessive fluid round it and i know they wont do anything or they will pump him full of antibiotics which i hate when they dont even have a diagnosis.

unsure what to do me thinks :{

The eye milk appears when piggies groom usually, there is a small oil gland between the eye and the ear and when the piggy uses their arms to groom the oil is transferrred to the eye where it mixes with the fluid causing an emulsion - oil and water mix - which is milky white. It would normally be dispersed through the grooming and via the tear duct.

If there is more oil being produced than normal or a blockage in the tear duct not allowing it to drain, it becomes more obvious. I would first try an optrex drop in the eye and massge the area between the corner of the eye and the nose to see if this will clear a small blockage. A quick check through the skin between eye and ear to find the gland to see if it a bit too oily - it also has long whiskers growing from it so you should be able to spot it. If the eye is not draining well the salt from the tears can crystalise on the skin causing discomfort so a clean up with cooled boiled water would help.

Hopefully it is a short term thing - if it continues or causes him discomfort then a cavy savvy vet may have further ideas.

See I am NOT an experienced piggie Mom. I had no idea what this white stuff is! I noticed it and freaked out. I thought maybe the poor guy had an infection. Thankfully Hubby looked it up and all is good. LOL

Thanks goodness I found you guys. Now maybe I wont freak out as much. LOL

Hope your little guys is ok!

thanks for the boarding offer, i am very nervous about leaving them and going away haha. when i did this last time craig and david had fallen out and craig had a big gash on his face :( however, they are supposed to be going to a different place this time and the lady is a rodentologist so she knows a bit about pigs. its called 'scarlet guineas' theres a website on the internet. i would bring them to you/or a friend without a shadow of a doubt its just getting them 'darn sarf' which is the problem. You couldnt be more further away pebble i wish you was my next door neighbour haha. then we could have a pig party.8)
