I just recently noticed that my pig, Luna, has been losing fur around her eye. She used to occasionally get crustiness but I would clean it off and she would be fine. Today I noticed that she had a mucusy substance right under her eye. When I cleaned it off a chunk of fur came off too. What should I do and should I separate her from her cage mate? Her cage mate, Lily, looks fine. I found this medicine online that says it helps with itching burning and irritated eyes. It also says that its safe for all small animals. I could get it from the pet store and try that or should I just take them to the vet?

Poor piggie:soz:. Sounds like an upper respiratory infection, and a severe one. when my piggie had this it was just a bit of crust around the eyes. I think you should take it to the vet to get treatment asap. Update us, please. Hope she feels better very soon!

Please take your piggie to the vets for a proper diagnosis. It’s best not to try and self treat as it could make the situation worse.
I hope she gets better soon.

I wouldn't treat with anything that wasn't diagnosed and would just see a vet. It could be anything from an eye injury to a respiratory infection causing discharge so it's best to be sure so that an on-spec treatment doesn't make it worse. I wouldn't separate the two pigs- if it's in injury it's not going to be worsened in proximity to another pig and if it's contagious your other pig has already been exposed and separating two bonded companions can cause them both stress. Definitely a vet visit is in order!

Agree with advice already given.
Please see a vet.
Keep us posted and hope all goes well

Please do NOT treat on spec with human or cheap shop brands as you can make easily things worse rather than better. Do not separate from her companion.

It may be that your guinea pig has something stuck under an eyelid or that her tearduct is a bit congested. In new guinea pigs gunk around the eye can also be a sign of a respiratory infection (URI), which requires an antibiotic. Hair loss and scaly crusts around the eye are a sign of fungal/ringworm.

If in any doubt, please see a vet to know what you are actually dealing with and to treat it appropriately with products that are suitable and doing the job! In the end, it is cheaper to see a vet quickly than when you have spent a lot of money on something that has not work and have to spent even more money for treating an advanced case that could have been avoided.

Completely agree. Please take her to a vet to see what is going on.
