Hi everyone,

Our older pig Small Pig has an eye infection - we took him to the vets today who has given us drops and told us to go back on Tuesday or sooner if it gets worse.

We've taken out the straw that we think caused the infection/poke, and they are currently enjoying some shredded newspaper.

I just wondered if there's anything else we can do for him while we hope the drops do their work?

Thanks in advance!

Eye infections normally clear up quite quickly. What drops have you been given?

If the infection is bad and he is in pain (puffed up fur) then you may want to contact your vet about giving him metacam (anti-inlfammaotry and painkiler) for a few days. Piggies in pain won;t eat.

Monitor his weight daily to make sure he is still eating properly...if he is losing weight on a daily basis then go back to your vet.

PS It;s still important he has hay to eat eve if you have swapped his bedding for shredded paper

sorry that your pig has an eye injury. They usually clear up fast.
Please get your pigs hay. They should be eating it as 80 per cent of their diet so basically grazing on it all of the time :-) x

Sorry, i Should have said, they do have hay to eat still (thanks for checking!)

He seems to be eating and drinking fine and behaviour hasn't changed, but will weigh him to be certain! Hopefully drops (tiacil) are doing their stuff!

The drops will do their work just fine, and in the measure that the injury goes down, it will get easier to put them in.

I find that it helps to distract the piggy with food, especially if you are on your own to get the drops in.

Thankfully, eye injuries tend to go down with the same speed as they come on.

Thanks for everyones advice! He went back to the vet today and all seems fine, have to go back again in a week to make sure though.

Now, to bulk buy some suitable hay!
