I have this 5 year old piggy called Luna. Last month she had an eye infection. Got antibiotics, it cleared up. Now she has another one. I have more antibiotics, but this time it's not clearing up. But we still have 4 days left.

It's still oozing, I accidently pulled a bit of gunked up fur out and now it looks even worse. When she went to the vets, they diagnosed ovarian cysts, (But we're not doing anything because of her age) Also the vet said the infection could be in her mouth as it's affecting her nose as well. If she gets another infection, the vet said just to clean the eye unless it's fully closed because we don't want her getting immune to antibiotics.

I'm just not sure what to do. I want her to get better cause I love her and all that, but it doesn't seem to be. The others keep trying to groom her, but she won't let them.

Hi and welcome

What colour is the gunk? Is blue/greyish or is yellowish/orange/greenish?

The first is an ulcerating injury in the eye or on the eye surface. It could be caused by something stuck under a lid, not just a clear hay poke. The second is from a well developed upper respiratory tract infection.
Transparent crusts are dried tear fluid caused by washing out an irritation in the eye; repeated/prolonged tearing can also be a sign of pain.

Please see your vet again before the weekend if possible. It is likely that the source of problem is still in the eye and continues to scratch it.

It's yellow and green. The vet did a full mot and couldn't find anything other than the eye problem. She doesn't scratch at the eye at all.

Hi

This could be a bacterial upper respiratory tract infection (URI) and not an eye infection. Gunky eyes can result from an untreated or undertreated URI that has never healed out fully. The lungs can check out clear.

So what do I do? Do I go back to the vets and tell them they have it wrong?

If the current treatment is not working, yes, you will have to go back and have your piggy re-examined. I am very sorry. I know that this is not what you want to hear but there is a well developed infection somewhere and not just the eyes but also the nose needs a very good look at. We don't see that kind of coloured mucus in eye injuries or infections but in respiratory infections.

But it still might as yet. I still have 4 days.

I’m really sorry, I agree with @Wiebke. If this was an eye infection the antibiotics should be working within 24-48 hours. If you’re seeing no improvement then the treatment isn’t working so she needs to be re-examined.

I'll have to find an out of hours vet then

This is her eye.

Oh dear, it doesn’t look good. It can’t wait

Call your normal vet practice phone number or check their website. Most surgeries will display their out of hours cover surgery details on their website or on their answer phone

Keep us posted. I hope she is ok

Oh dear I really do think that needs to be seen as soon as possible.

Update: Luna hasn't got a URI. It's just in the eye. We've got some different anibiotics as well as an oral one. She's still fine. The eye is sore and bald, but the vet isn't that worried. the gunk is making it bald, as well as Trixie over grooming. We just need to find where the infection is, and the oral antibiotics will kill anything off anyway. Three different vets have eamined her now and they can't find any ulcer or injury to the eye. I'll take her back if these don't work.

Goodness that doesn't look right does it ☹️ Has she been given any pain relief?
I hope these new antibiotics work for her! 🤞
