Hi all,

Our 1yr boar Monkey, is having a problem with one of his eyes - closing it and squinting. I had a look at it, and cleaned with water, but couldn't see any gunk, it isn't cloudy, and couldn't see any hay etc. The corner of the eye is slightly (I mean very slightly) red.

My OH took the pig to the vet (the normal person we see was off so saw a different vet). They stuck the iodine in the eye, and couldn't see any problem either. The only thing they could think is that the back teeth have overgrown somehow causing the problem with the eye?
They gave pain relief (meloxivet) and antibiotics (baytril), and told us to come back in 4 days.

The vet seemed incapable of checking the backteeth without a x-ray, so will head to the CCT to get them checked out. In the meantime, I feel very uneasy about giving antibiotics given the symptoms - does it make any sense that an issue with the back teeth could cause a problem with an eye?

i dont know for definate, but i can imagine it could.

Good luck at CCT, maybe get there as soon as you can.

Is your piggy eating normal and behaving normal? are you weighing?

If he has trouble with his teeth they can press up into the eye causing an infection. The antibiotics would cure it but he would need work done on his teeth. It sounds like you need to see another vet as this one did not seem to satisfy you. Always seek another opinion if you are unsure. Poor thing only a month old and unwell. I hope he gets better soon.

i think hes one, they just had him a month, either way its sad.

Good luck, i too would be getting a second opinion.

If you say exactly where you are people may be able to recommend a decent vet?

Thanks all, went ahead with the antibiotics & painkillers, no change so went to Activecare in Tilehurst to see Jenny.
First visit she couldn't see anything obvious, but we tried some Fucithalmic eye ointment for a week. He's was still winking away, so took him back to Jenny. Her and her colleague had a another good look at the eye, but cannot see anything (Possibly a minor calcium deposit there). The vets are going to talk to a specialists for some clues and get back to us on the mystery.

Monkey is still eating, weight is constant, and doesn't seem in pain.

The vet says the best place to go is to Great Western Referrals, www.gwexotics.com has anybody had any experience of them? (For a consulation and possible xray it's going to be massively expensive - which is ok is they find the problem and solve it!)

These vets are very close to me :) I havnt had to use them but have had them recomended. Would love to know how you get on.

Keeping my fingers crossed for you.
