I noticed that one of my guinea pig's eyes has been acting up. The eye itself is clear, but the area immediately around it is red and irritated. It looks like the eye is slightly pressed into the head as well, but I can't be sure. She is behaving normally, and eats and interacts with the other piggies without incident. I don't have the time or the money to get a vet check right now, so I could appreciate any judgement you guys might have.

Hi, obviously a vet visit is the best thing if you have anything happening- especially regarding the eye as letting anything progress not only impacts further on the piggy but also increases the end all vet bill.

Could you attach a picture? We can't diagnose, but someone on the forum might have encountered the same thing

Sorry about the late reply! I have some good news and bad news. The good news is that I tried rinsing out her eye with lukewarm water, and it looks a bit better. The bad news is that her condition remains, and now one of my OTHER pigs has the same eye problem.

Here's a picture of her eye immediately after eye-drops. It's hard to tell from the picture, but the white around the eye is a light red, and she's squinting somewhat. IMG_1930.webp

I'm trying to get a vet check, but it won't happen for another couple days. Is there anything I can do in the meantime? Do you know what this is?

The only comforting thing about this is that it isn't affecting either pigs behavior. They still eat, and are still curious about their surroundings. I've put my other pigs in quarantine just to be safe.

Sounds as if you might need an emergency vet visit rather than wait

Just realised you are in the USA - my experience of the UK is that when it’s an emergency you get fitted in, especially when it’s a small pet.
Will be keeping you in my thoughts- hoping things work out well
