Hello 😊

I have a 5 year old female piggy called Mariah who is part of a herd of 8. She lives inside in a large homemade C&C enclosure. She has only been with me for the last year as I took her on from a lady who could no longer care for her. She has always been quite a lazy piggy preferring to snooze rather than run around but this has always been her normal. Over the last week I have just had a feeling that something is off with her. She has been eating normally, maintained her weight (I have been weighing daily) , eating her food and isn't showing any signs of being in pain but she just seemed off. This evening when I picked her up I noticed some clouding around the outside of the eye. There isn't anything in the eye at all. I had a good look and it doesn't look like hay poke. I have had this a few times before but this seems different. I will obviously be contacting my exotic vet on Monday and getting her seen asap but I just wondered if anyone had any thoughts on what this could be? I was wondering if possibly the start of cataracts?

Thank you 😊

Sorry I can’t advise but I hope the vet can see you on Monday.

If it is cataracts that is liveable with.
My Merab had cataracts for the last couple of years of her life and was completely blind.
It didn’t stop her living life to the full.

Hopefully it’s nothing serious and she’s lucky to have such an aware and caring owner.

Let us know how you get on

That doesn't look overly like cataracts to me.

One of my blind girls has something similar, which she was born with and has developed over time (she was the result of excessive inbreeding).

I've also seen calcium inclusions in eyes, but those are quite defined and it's difficult to tell how sharp it is in your picture.

My peegs have always got along just fine with whatever level of eyesight they find themselves with. So long as she is navigating alright and eating/ drinking then all is well.

I would also agree that it doesn’t appear to be cataracts but you of course need a vet to find out what actually is going on.

Let us know what the vet says
