Hi! Just thought I'd pop on here and ask for a bit of advice. I was checking on my piggies a few days back and noticed that one of my boars, Thistle - who is around five or six years old now - had an almost completely blue eye, as seen below [sorry its so blurry; basically the blue covers almost the entirety of his right eye, with a slight gap around the outside, and appears very cloudy and grey, almost like a film, so that the pupil can't be seen. I organised a visit to the vets immediately. I've never been to this vets before for piggies, so I was quite nervous. Upon entering the vet assessed him, asked a few typical questions; how old is he, does he seem okay in himself, ect ect. After this, she squirted green dye into his right eye where a mark could be seen, and suggested it was from a scratch or poke, perhaps from some hay or an interaction with a cagemate. I was then given some eye drops to give to him three times every day, and told to return in a week.

I was wondering if anyone had a similar experience with this kind of a condition in their own guinea pigs, or with the drug I was assigned, which is Isathal Fusidic acid. On the leaflet given it was described to be a prescription for conjunctivitis, mainly for dogs, cats and rabbits, and should be administered twice a day. Does anyone else have any experience with this? Do you have any idea if it will work, or is there some better alternative?

I believe that it is the same drug as Fucithalmic which vets do prescribed for eye injuries.

Eye injuries need to be monitored so please keep an eye on it and if it seems worse go back to the vet before the week is up. We have had piggies with hay pokes in the past and with drops all has been fine. Sending your little one lots of healing vibes

Isathal is the new brand name for fucithalmic. It is standard for eye ulcer treatment in guinea pigs. My Nerys was put on isathal last December for her ulcerating eye infection. Depending on how bad the infection is, it can take a few days to clear. Please contact your vet asap if the eye is not showing signs of improvement within about 3-4 days or is getting worse at any time.

Ahh thanks for both of your inputs! I was quite worried for awhile there, though I suppose I should trust the vets verdict considering its their job and all, but this has really put my mind at ease. Thanks again ^.^
