I have had no experience before with eye problems. Today when putting Cookie back home after run time we noticed her eye was cloudy and gunky/watery. It is definately swollen and it seems to be the white part of her eye which is swollen. Could it be the start of a URI or a hay poke? Any ideas?

She is otherwise acting her normal self and is up in weight from her last weigh. Will be taking her to vets tomorrow just in case.

It's probably a hay poke or some other injury if it's just the one eye

Good luck at the vet! Get well soon Cookie! xx x>>

Our guinea pig had exactly the same thing. I bathed his eye with saline solution twice a day for three days and then it was completely clear and has been fine ever since.

Worth a try!

Can you see anything in the eye, sometimes they get hay seeds stuck under the eyelid? Maybe try to flush it out with cooled boiled water and some cotton wool. If you can't see anything after doing this maybe a trip to the vets.

I removed several hair seeds or small pieces of hay from my piggie's eyes as she was always acting like a mole & digging tunnels :)

If you gently move the eyelid back slightly without touching any part of the eyeball itself, the seed or piece of hay usually makes itself obvious. After very careful removal (do not attempt if you are uncertain or piggy shows any discomfort though) I would use Brolene eyedrops & the eye will return to normal in a few days. Any doubts though seek a vet/rodentologist asap.

It does look sore :( THeir eyes do water and go cloudy when there's any damage..... if she's sitting quietly and not happy i'd be straight off to the vets as the offending piece of hay could well still be in there. A vet can put drops in their eyes to check for scratches from hay etc... and give you some cream to heal it up.

How's the eye today?
healing wheeeeeeeeeeeks for Cookie XXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXX

Cookies eye looks less swollen today but there is a white cloud in the middle of the eye. She is off too the vets this afternoon but is behaving fine e.g. really pesky!

Just been to vets not great news. It's an eye poke injury, possibly from hay. Cookie is now on Baytril and fucithalmic Eye drops for 3 days before another check up. The vet says it's 50/50 as to if she's going to have to remove her eye :-(
I know it's an accident but feel like I have let her down... Just hope things turn around so keeping my fingers crossed for her.

Fingers crossed for her! Woog was on eye drops and that made the swelling go down a lot. I hope those help Cookie!

*Hugs*

Try not to worry too much at this stage, it may well not come to that. The eye may just need time to heal itself. I have just gone through similar with one of my guineas Poppy, I wrote a thread about her last week. She has been caught in the eye by one of her cage mates on a trip to the vets, The eye is still ok but she has muscle that has come out of the puncture wound, the vet has stitched her eye closed for ten days and she is on baytril too, he said that they were going to give it time and chance to heal itself, he is going to review it in ten days which is next monday, they are hoping she may be able to keep her eye but may be blind.
Ask the question when you go back to the vet to see if it is possible to keep her eye if it is not infected even if your guinea can't see through it. They adapt well to the loss of sight.

I am sorry, I think it will heal nicely though by the looks of things, mine had worse injuries from hay seeds & were fine after I removed them carefully & used the eye drops. I tried to make sure I put the loose hay into a big bag & gave it a good shake to make sure all the seeds dropped to the bottom so they didn't get into the cage. It did work most of the time, but there isn't much you can do if they enjoy burrowing in their hay! Fingers crossed for you both.

And in view of your photo - this is the best treatment for her. Well done for taking her to a vet and getting the correct meds....and you haven;t let her down...hay pokes/eye injuries are just part-and-parcel of being a piggie slave I;m afraid

Sending hugs

Really don't feel bad about a hay poke, I have had four in the past year and they really are just an 'occupational hazard' of piggy ownership. You did the best thing you could by going to the vet

Don't worry too much about losing the eye just yet, all mine have been dealt with using drops/eye gel from the vet and all healed brilliantly, so fingers crossed xx

my friend had a piggy with a cloudy eye she was also concerned... turned out the next day there was some hay poking out of it so she carefully removed it then a couple of days later it was better...

Hey Willow, it's still looking cloudy and red at close inspection. She is such a good girl when having her drops popped in, although not fond of baytril! lol!

She is still running laps and popcorning, I presume if it was infected she would have been quiet and withdrawn. We are seeing our normal cavy vet tomorrow afternoon so will know if it's gonna have to be removed then. Keeping fingers crossed.

Thanks for asking about her and thinking about us x x

I don't think you will have to have it removed for hay poke, Poppy my guinea was bitten in the eye, she has had it stitched closed for five days, due to there being muscle from inside her eye poking through the hole. Anyhow she has managed to pull at the stitches and her eye was partially open so I had to cut the other stitch as it was pulling her eyelid a funny shape and the muscle behind her eye has gone back into place and her eye seems to be healing very well. So I wouldn't worry too much, you have done the right thing by seeing the vet, they are very resilliant animals and bounce back very well.

I'm glad she's acting normally, and being good when having her drops! Woog turns into a monster piggy with her drops, she hates them!

Fingers defiantly still crossed for her!

Good luck at the vet!
xx

Hows the eye today? What did the vet say about it? Hope everything's ok!

xx

Good news! We saw our normal piggie vet and she is pleased with how it is healing, Baytril for another few days and the drops for another 10 until we see her again in 10 days for a check up, but the eye looks much better.

Cookie wasn't as good a patient today and yelled the place down as soon as our vet picked her up. Luckily we had cucumber with us to bribe...
Thanks for thinking of her, give all your beutiful piggies a chin rub for us. Hope Woog's x) eye is well now. x x

Aw, that's great news! I'm glad it's healing well! :)
Woog's eye is just about healed up :) Thank goodness too, because now she knows when it's time for her meds, and she turns into a crazy Woog! :)) Thank you for thinking of her :)

Sending piggy kisses to you, Cookie, Treacle, and Putt x>>
