Amber is 3 months old and I got her last Saturday. Her eyes are red which I don't think effects her eye sight in any way, but I've noticed over the past few days that she doesn't seem to have very good eye sight. If I put my hand near her face she won't move at all, she just sits there, and she runs into the foodbowl and runs through her food. She also ran into her hutchmate, Spicy this afternoon. She was in a tunnel in her hutch and I put some grass on the floor outside her tunnel and she walked over it, she didn't even seem to notice it was there, but when I guided her to it she found it and ate it. Are these signs that her eye sight isn't very good or am I just being paranoid :)) ?

Also, I can go to pick her up really easily, when my other guinea-pigs were babies they'd run away as soon as I put my hand in the hutch) but Amber will sit doing whatever she'd doing until I touch her and then she'll run off.

hi Alicia

It is said that piggies dont have very good eyesight to start with but I'm not so sure about our two they can see things fae distances like you wouldny believe :)) especially when they are out for a wander and you leave a door open they are out it like linfird christie

on a seriousnote though I am sure someone will be along shortly with lots more experience than me to help you out :)

I would recommend that you have her seen by a vet - it sounds like she could be blind (nothing to do with her eye colour). Perhaps you may also want to check her hearing if you are not sure, just in case.

Please, don't panic! Sight is thankfully not the strongest of piggy senses and a piggy can lead as happy and fulfilled a life as a mornal piggy!

Perhaps this children's story I made about one of my piggies that went blind from cataracts can help reassure you.

Thank you Wiebke I feel a lot happier now after reading your story. It's a great story and mischief is so cute. Is there anything I can do to help Amber in any way? Should I change the layout of her hutch or anything? I'm taking my cat to the vets on Saturday I'll take Amber with me too. I'm just going to have a look on guinea lynx to see if there's anything about blindness.
