Can anybody give me information ? Approx 6 months ago one of my guinea's eye became red and swollen. After taking him to the vets she said he had somehow ruptured his eyeball. After several weeks of applying anti biotics and viscose tears 3 - 4 times a day the eye completely recovered. Now the other has becomethe same! Despite applying the same medication the eye does not seem to be returnin g back to normal. It looks as if there is a layer of dry skin across the eye. The piggie does not appear to be in any pain or discomfort and is eating well and thriving. I am about to take him back to the vets but they dont seem to know what the problem is.

I'm not sure I fully understand the problem from the description, it's not something I think I've come across.

If his eyeball had truly ruptured, I'm surprised the eye was kept in. I'm assuming - if the vet was correct in saying it had ruptured - he has absolutely no vision in that eye at all? It seems odd to me that the eye would rupture yet still manage to heal. I'd wonder if a corneal ulcer or infection of some sort was the problem.

When you say a layer of dry skin, could you describe it in more detail please - or even better, if possible could you post a photo?

It is good to hear he is eating and otherwise well.

Here are a couple of photos attached. Sorry about the quality of them.

Thanks, I can't see them very clearly but it does give an idea of the state of the eye. Stating the obvious I know but it really doesn't look good. The vet checked for foreign bodies e.g. hay stuck in the eye?

What are the eye drops called that you are applying, and how often?

I've never seen anything quite like that either - I have a pig with a ruptured eye here and the eyeball is kind of deflated and sunken in - nothing like that pic.

I hope something can be done - looks very sore :(

Many thanks for your link, unfortunately I dont think the eye looks like this although the vets opinion seems to be the same and when his other was like this the vet said it would probably just shrivel up and die and then to everyones amazement the eye went on to make a complete recovery including sightThe eye drops I have been using are Fusidin and also Viscotears. It is also interesting to read re the hay, for the first six months I had these guineas (Nik & Nak) from Norfolk Rescue I was giving "Just Grass" daily witrh no issues and it is only since they have been having hay that this problem has arisen. Do you think there is a link?
