Hi all
I have noticed over the last few days n both eyes on my guinea pig are protruding more than usual. At first I thought I was imagining it.They are not cloudy and there is no discharge or crustiness. She is getting on for 7 years old is this usual before I book the vet?

Hi!

Have you checked her weight and it is not caused by some weight loss?

It is usually just one eye that is protruding, most often because of a retrobulbar abscess (i.e. an abscess behind the eye ball) and rarer from glaucoma. I have yet to come across a case where both eyes were affected evenly at the same time.

It is more likely that you have never noticed before that some piggies do have naturally more protruding eyes but if you have worries, please have your girl given a thorough vet check.

Ok thank you for the feedback. Her eyes have definitely changed tho and you can side the white lid inside on one which is different so maybe it is just worth a check up at the vets.

We had an elderly sow in the rescue called Boogie who's eyes both protruded. The vet gently ripped her forward and he eyes protruded more. Turns out she had high blood pressure!

Oh dear ! What did they do for that or is there no meds for piggie high blood pressure!?
