Hi there. My guinea pig had a runny eye yesterday. today it's gone all cloudy and dull. Looks like she is now blind in one eye. It even looks like it has a flat surface in the centre of the eye. Just wondering if anyone else has experienced this and what it might be. Have never has much joy with vets and guinea pigs - they usually end up sicker. Anyone got any ideas what may have happened to my little girl. Thanks

Sounds like your guinea pig may have a hay poke, which may have ulcerated the eye. Either way you need to
try and get to a vet ASAP to prevent loss of the eye. Rosie had a hay poke last year and she was treated with some drops from the vet.
Where about are you based? Someone could possibly recommend a guinea pig savvy vet in your area.

An eye injury/illness definately needs seeing by a vet as eyes are so complex, i know each guinea pig is different but my piggie like poster above had a hay seed in her eye you couldnt see it but i took her the vets and got an eye wash and it eventually worked its way out it was massive compared to her eye and she had drops and luckily no lasting damage was done to her eye and her eye went back to looking like normal. Hope your piggie is ok. xx

oh thank you all. ok I need to go to vet asap. I live in Mansfield, Notts. I am angry with myself now cos only just started using straw for bedding and remember someone saying it can damage their eyes. oh dear poor Lizzy. OK thanks. I think it's too late as it's gone so dull. She looks blind. Ok thanks x

Suprisingly eyes can make a full recovery even when they can look pretty bad. So it is best to get her seen when you can as it may be painful for her. I'm not sure about vets in your area but I will ask to see if. anyone else does

The eye going Cloudy is its natural way of healing, i had he same thing a few years ago with one of my girls, we had been out for a few hours, come back and she looks awful, her eye was all wet and squinted and she kept pawing it, so i had her out, open the eye as wide as i could and she had a sharp piece of hay stuck it in the eye, we pulled it out and straight away the eye looks better, but it did go cloudy for 24 hours, but soon healed itself and she is fine now.

I use straw as bedding, always have and probably always will, its never caused any problems with my piggies as i use soft barley straw, i have tried many different types of bedding and always reverted back.

Good luck x

Eyes cloud over when they ulcerate; but thankfully, with the right treatment, they also heal up quite quickly again. The important thing is to see a vet promptly.

When administering eye drops (depending on the severity, it is 3-4 times a day), you can either wrap the piggy in towels or - as I do - sit on your thighs, facing away from you with a bowl of grass or treats. Try to get the stuff in the eye once the piggy is totally absorbed in the food. The first couple of days will be most difficult, as the ulcerated eye is very painful and tender, it gets easier once the eye is healing up.

thank you all so much for your advice. It's the first experience of this for me. I have been to the vets and got eye drops she told me it is likely to heal up very well. Phew. Eye drops went in easy and she was such a good girl and sat still while it soaked in a bit. Now she is back in her run with her friend and eating her breakfast! Teresa
