I was with the guinea pigs today. They live in an outdoor three-storey hutch in Spring. I made the really stupid mistake of leaving the second floor door open for a couple seconds while I went to the other end of the garden to get their bowl of veg. I do this often and nothing has happened until now but I now realise this is really stupid to do. I turn around and Ted is on the floor, having fallen about 35cm to the ground. He didn’t squeal in pain or make any other noise and instantly began walking about and eating some of the lawn. Terrified, I quickly picked him up and put him in his grass pen that he was about to be put into anyway. He didn’t seem in pain or limping and is now happily waddling about his grass pen, chomping on grass. His vet is currently shut due to Coronavirus and the next closest is 7 hours and a ferry ride away, so I can’t get him checked right now. Is he OK? How can I help him?

As long as he can walk and isn't showing any signs of limping, he will probably be fine. Just look out for him in the next few days, and tell us if anything changes.

If he is walking and behaving normally he should be fine. From that height internal injuries are unlikely but keep a close eye on him. If he landed nose first it is possible he may have fractured his teeth below the gumline, if that has happened as they continue to grow they will become wobbly then fall out then grow back. So make sure he continues to eat normally over the coming few weeks, if they do become lose he won't be able to bite off pieces of veg so will need them chopping up small and will need to be fed cut grass as again won't be able to bite off growing blades.

Hi, thank you very much for your replies, they are really reassuring. He is walking fine and eating grass fine. I’ll notify you if anything changes.
