I'm picking him up tomorrow night. He was neutered 4 weeks on Monday and they say he needs to be kept away from my sows for another week. I know I've see it said on here how many weeks he should be kept away but I can't find it, is 5 weeks ok?

I have 3 sows and a 2 storey cage...it's going to be extra work for me because I am only using the bottom cage at the moment and cleaning out the top cage means getting out the step-ladder! He looks so lovely though and he is on his own as his brothers were rescued and he wouldn't get on with other boars, so he has been neutered to be housed with sows. He has Teddy fur which I really love. I will post a photo asap. He is a but skittish because he has been kept by himself for a while but I hope he grows to enjoy cuddles, each of my rescues have been quite timid because they haven't been used to being handled.

I am concerned that my sows have ear mites again though, they did seem better after canaural but maybe they have become re-infected despite my best efforts of changing back from fleece to finacard and plastic houses again. I am taking the girls back to the vet. I can keep the boar separate until the girls have had their treatment again but it takes 5 weeks and it's sad keeping a piggy by themself.

He needs to be kept separate for 6 weeks. Wiebke has had a piggy give birth after she was put in with a supposedly safe 5 week post op boar

I hope it all works out for you, fingers crossed on the mites situation and on the rescued boar meeting all his wives! What's his name? Looking forward to a pic!

Thank you, I did wonder if it was 6 weeks but I couldn't find any posts on it with searching!

His name is Treacle but my daughter isn't keen on that so it may be changed.

It's difficult isn't it, I was supposed to bond mine with a 4 week post neuter boar and the rescue couldn't understand why I suddenly said I needed to wait two more weeks! Unfortunately her vet has always told her they are fine after 4 weeks

I'm fortunate having a second cage and will give him lots of love (hopefully he will enjoy it!) until he can have company. I will let him pick the sow he would like to shack up with and hope it will be clear when I introduce them all.

One of my two female piggies had 3 babies last year 1 sow and 2 boars. I waited 7 weeks after my boars were neutered until I introduced them to their 3 wives. I put Mum in the run first (as the dominant female of the 3) and introduced her sons back to her. When she had accepted them I introduced the other 2 one at a time after much wee spraying and bum sniffing they all got on (thankfully). I did stand by with a towel to throw over them just in case! Now they live as a happy family of 5 in a two storey hutch.

I have him home! His rescue name is Treacle but my daughter is calling him Mr Squiggles! I don't have photos yet, at the moment he is discovering the joy of a fleece snuggy for the first time! He isn't as timid as my last rescue and is quite vocal, which I like. He is really lovely.

So long as he is beside the sows he'll be fine. I had a C&C cage & put some grids across the cage. That way they can natter together, but not physically mix. Mine used to eat on eiether side of the divider.
I think Treacle is a brilliant name.

I have a 2 storey cage that I've made into separate cages so I have to hold them up to the bars! At some point I will introduce with him a carrier. No danger of them getting together before his neutering is fully effective. I'm not able to have them side by side in the cages. He has been on his own for a while as his brothers sold quickly and he didn't get on with any other boars.

Congrats on the new edition. Can't wait to see pics when he has settled in.

I'm afraid they can't be side by side all the time. When he is ready to live with a sow, I will introduce them as I normally do.

Just back from the vets, he has a little redness on one eyelid but nothing to worry about.

Aww he's stunning.

Ideally it would be best to have them side by side but as that's not an option, at least they can all smell each other and be able to hear each other.

Good luck for a successful bond xx

Today I've had him in a carry case for a while with the girls able to go up to the grill and around the case. When I held him up to the girls' cage, Clove, the dominant sow, came closest but slightly chattered her teeth. I expect he will bond best with Calico, the youngest and bottom ranking sow. Clove is grey and very much like our last grey piggy, Cherry who was top sow too...Cherry got on with Scruffy (boar) but would rear up at Humbug (boar), so I guess Humbug was more dominant than Scruffy.

Awww he gorgeous. Glad there was nothing serious at the vet. Good luck with the bonding.

last night my partner held Treacle while I held Calico (we call her Ruggles now!). This is the piggle I would most like him to bond with, my cage isn't big enough for 4 so I will split them up between my 2 cages. Well, he was very interested in her! He sniffed her nose and tried to rumblestrut on my partner's chest. Calico was very calm and lounged in my arms. Then I introduced Clove and Rusty in the same way, these girls were a bit nervous about meeting and Treacle didn't seem very interested in them. Once he was back in his cage, I held up Calico and he was so happy, he swaggered up and down his cage, showing her his best moves...I think it's love already :D

This one is Calico (aka Ruggles because of her fur)

Here they are all together in the bath while I change their cage. He is bonded with Calico/Ruggles, who he is next too, he and Rusty (far right) have been flying at each other head on! Clove the grey one is top sow and they have just been chattering at each other but Clove has been putting Rusty back in her place. They will be living in two separate cages.

Glad that you have been able to split your piggies into pairs.

The first rule of bonding is - have a plan B (or even C) is things don't go to plan!

Cross gender bonding often fails at the dominance stage, when the top spot cannot be decided or when a very dominant sow is not willing to even consider letting a rival in.
