Have researched the antibiotics your vet had prescribed - Betamox contains Amoxycillin

Duphamox also contains Amoxycillin:

AMOXYCILLIN IS NOT SUITABLE FOR GUINEA PIGS -
Hope someone can put my mind at rest and please say I've overlooked something but these meds are potentially dangerous :...

Penicillin and amoxycillin should neer be given orally to a guinea pig as they wipe out the good bacteria and can cause enterotoxaemia - an overgrowth of harmful bacteria in the gut including Clostridium. Most vets know this but some vets don;t.

However I have noticed that vets are starting to give these antibioitics to rabbits and piggies by injection with successful outcomes when baytril/septin doesn;t work- this route of administration appears to dramatically reduce the risk.

Personally I would still be concerned about giving this drug but as the guinea pig is in a serious condition the vet may have thought the possible benefits outweight the risk at the moment.

It's worth contacting the vet to check with them their reasons for giving it and also monitor the piggie very closely.....and at the first sign of diarrhoea developing go straight back to the vets.

Thank you Pebble, was about to PM you as I couldn't settle when I read about these meds. :(

oh no! i didnt know this! :( What do i do? Do i just leave it and see how he is, and tell the vet tommorow? They did say last chance scenario, on paper we arent meant to give this med (not sure which but she mentioned steroid?!) but said that there was nothing else they could try and it was basically do or die, so maybe this is why they have given? i hope so! xx

Get in touch with the vets now, show them the info on the links provided and even this thread if they want to see it. Tell them your not happy and want a refund and get another vet, if you give us your location maybe we can recommend one to you.

Good luck x

I think I would do as Pebble suggests, call and have a chat with your vet, ask for the reasons they put him on these antibiotics.
I'm so sorry you are going through this and was fearful that these meds may have prescribed by mistake but it appears not :(
Rooting for little Bumble x>>

Just ring and spoke to them to try put my mind at ease and it was as Pebble said that they had tried other things and had no reaction from guinea pigs picking up so had given these as a last resort kind of thing, it was either try it or they die anyway. Which is what they explained when i asked about it. Will mention again tommorow when i go and just hope Bumble recovers. I'm hoping the eating grass was a good sign after not touching anything (other than me syringe feeding him) in a few days. Still not taking water so shall continue to give via syringe x
