Sadly my 9 year old lady Calli suddenly fell ill late yesterday evening and quickly developed advanced severe bloat.
We had to rush her to the out-of-hours vets and send her to the Rainbow Bridge in the wee hours of the night to spare her dying in absolute agony. :(

Calli has been enjoying her life with her new best friend, fellow diva and snuggle partner Tegan after losing her old mates she'd grown up with, first dominant Bling in 2015 and then long-suffering George at the end of 2016.

Calli was a feisty but tiny lady who has really come into her own in old age and has blossomed.
I am so pleased that she lived to celebrate her 9th birthday in May!

She spent half a year here with Bling and George in 2015 during longer than expected building work at her home and then came back here to live out her life with piggy company when she became gradually depressed after George's death at the start of 2017, aged 7 years.

Sorry to hear this @Wiebke. It is very sad when you lose a much loved pet. She is out of pain now and has been reunited with Bling and George at the Rainbow Bridge.

I am so sorry to hear this news. Calli had a wonderful long life. She was such a beautiful guinea pig.
I hope that you will allow yourself time to grieve.
Be gentle with yourself and follow all the good advice you give others in the same situation.

Don't worry, I am going to be gentle with myself and have first and foremost a much needed sleep-in after not getting any sleep last night. I am going to take it lighter once the adrenalin runs out and exhaustion hits in the next few days. Right now the adrenaline is still running too high so I am better off keeping myself busy. :tu:

Thankfully I know that I have done absolutely the right thing even without the out-of-hours vet telling me so! I have been braced for the fact that if any illness hits, it is going to be most likely very quick and hard. A very old or frail piggy can go downhill in a matter of hours instead of days because they do no longer have the substance and the immune system to fight whatever it is. I've rushed too many piggies to the vets be pts as an emergency now; so it is in many ways easier to deal with as I know how to cope best after so many over the years. No guilt and no regrets...

I have given Calli the best life and environment I could, and she has likely lived for longer than she would have otherwise. As far as I was concerned, every day she had here in good health and with companionship through the grids and later in the cage was a blessing.
Guinea pigs live from day to day; they do not think about the future or about old age and death. I have given Calli many more happy days than we all expected, and when the end did finally come, I have kept it as kind and quick for her as I could under the circumstances. She was ill only for a few hours and was spared the very worst of it; she would not have survived the night anyway.

Just the sadness of losing her, and that will take a while... She was quite a character, and you couldn't but love her!

I understand - but it still hurts to lose a beloved pet.
I’m glad there are no regrets.
You do a fantastic job for your herd and give us so much support and wisdom.
It’s your turn to receive our love and support

But thank you for your concern! I promise to do what I tell others... :tu:

It always hurts, and that part is never getting any less painful. Each bond is unique; and each loss is always new in that respect. Your head may have learned to accept death as an integral and unavoidable part of pet ownership and knows where the way is leading towards, but your heart has to make the journey afresh every time - and you can't hurry that on. :(

I still miss all my RIP piggies, each in its own way... But I also cherish that I have had them in my life and how rich they have made my life! They are still with my in my thoughts and my heart.

My deepest sympthy to you.
You done that beautiful piggie a wonderful tribute in the hardest of times. Piggie world is better because of people like you and every piggie that you come across can tell the Rainbow World what a great life that have had.
Bless You.xx

So sorry Wiebke, Calli had the best of lives with you and her friends. As you have always said, piggies live for the moment and her moments were full of love. Massive hugs to you for the loss of your little beauty

Sleep well pretty one
