It has not been an easy few weeks for me when Hedydd suddenly took a last turn for the worst right in the middle of a very hectic time.
She is the very last big Tribe group member to join her friends at the Rainbow Bridge over the last three months.
When I had to send her after her companions, I'd just finished writing Tegan's tribute article for the next Guinea Pig Magazine issue, which I had to formulate in a way that it included Hedydd's impending passing. This was very painful for me. As was going through eight years and several tens of thousands of pictures yet again to choose the best out of several hundred from a very long life... and knowing that from now on this part of my life will forever be firmly in the past!
The large 2011 class has helped me through some very tough and taxing years; they have cheered me up and given me strength when I needed it most, having to put my own life on the back burner and be strong for others. That is why saying goodbye to four last survivors in such a short space of time is so hard for me.

Hedydd is the eighth piggy to leave me this year - a new sad record; only leavened by the fact that more than half of them have lived to the upper end or even beyond the average life span. It doesn't make saying goodbye any less heart-breaking, though!

Heulwen (left) and Heddyd (right) with their mother and their 6 rescue born sisters in December 2011

When I travelled by train at the end of 2011 all the way from the UK Midlands to Glynneath Guinea Pig Rescue in South Wales for a playmate for my surprise baby Tegan, it was not the easiest of journeys because the line between Cardiff and Swansea had been closed after being hit by a freak lightning strike – in December! Anyway, I did make it to the rescue through the ensuing chaos and a scenic tour around Welsh industrial areas, if only for a rather rushed pick up (forget about the lunch!), and eventually got back home for a belated dinner with 7 months old Hedydd ‘Skylark’ in tow, who settled into her new home and her new big family very quickly.

Her slightly older sister Heulwen ‘Sunshine' from the previous litter joined after the end of her mandatory pregnancy watch. The sisters remained close for the rest of their very long lives.

The sisters in 2012 - 2014 - 2018

Because of their horrible background from a ‘cat’s takeaway’ free roaming and multiplying back garden situation, I was hugely relieved when the sisters’ reached their 4th birthdays, never expecting both of them to celebrate their 8th birthday in turn!

Hedydd on her 8th birthday

Being both strong-willed and ambitious, Tegan and Hedydd never became best of friends, but there was quite a bit of ‘keeping up with the Joneses’ going on between them as they grew up in the large Tribe group during its heyday! Despite Tegan’s ambitions and higher status through her family connection with Ffwlbri, it was in the end less flamboyant but more grounded Hedydd who ultimately had the more successful career and the happier life.

Sadly Hedydd has now joined her sister and friends of old as the last surviving member of the original big Tribe group after she suddenly lost any control over all her legs 10 days ago.

In her quietly efficient, no-nonsense and seemingly effortless approach to life, Hedydd has been one of my most successful long term leading ladies, running first a the ginger sub-group of the Tribe and then continuing to run the same group stably for another five years with two husboars in succession, first older Maelog for three years from 2014-17 and then younger Pioden (who despite his large frame was entirely dominated by his pint-sized wives) for the last two and a half years.

(All four of Pioden's wives have sadly passed away in the space of a year, with the two oldest living the longest)

Hedydd's group was the most harmonic one I have ever had for such a long time. The only major dispute happened when Hafren staged an unsuccessful take-over attempt in 2015 but then found her own happiness with her soulmate Iola. It was only in a crisis that Hedydd ever needed to display her considerable strength of personality and power.

Hedydd always remained open and welcoming to any new arrivals all her life long, asserting her unquestioned dominance with a minimum of fuss.

Seeing double with 4 years old Ffraid, who had arrived sight unseen as an emergency all the way from Jersey in 2012!

When difficult to bond Tegan was facing becoming a single widow for the third time at the beginning of this year as her then companion, equally bereaved Hafren, was visibly fading away, I made the decision to split Hedydd and Heulwen from Pioden and his slightly younger wife Helygen to form another ‘Old Ladies’ group so I could keep their social life as stable as possible and would have to face the need to find a new companion only once more for the last survivor.

As it happened, 4 years old Helygen passed away very unexpectedly in May; which came as a bit shock. So Pioden joined the Old Ladies group as well. Sadly my remaining old ladies have followed each other in quick succession over the last three months with Hedydd bringing up the rear.

Shy Pioden with his three by then already very frail ladies Heulwen (who would sadly pass away not very long after around her 8th birthday), Tegan and Hedydd

I did introduce a baby girl for Pioden after Tegan’s death in August to make sure that he was taken care of but at a stage while Dryw was still too young to be a challenge for by a very elderly and frail Hedydd, whose arthritis sadly speeded up in the weeks after Tegan’s passing despite my best support care efforts and medication.

My last picture of Hedydd with little Dryw and Pioden, taken just days before her death

Anyway, the little baby did perk up Hedydd somewhat in her last weeks and even induced her to try and copy the odd baby antic! It was very sweet to watch Hedydd with her stiff legs to try and popcorn on top of a fleece cave! And very touching to watch little Dryw sleeping snuggled up next to Hedydd to in order to comfort her ‘granny’ on her bad days.

Hedydd survived her very fraught early days as a still nursing baby in that back garden thanks to her caring and determined mother (who sadly died young); but she has carried on this legacy throughout her own life by giving love and support to those in her care, and being giving it in return right to the end.

It was a piggy life most well lived!

Oh Wiebke I am so very sorry to see this, even though it’s not completely unexpected.
It’s been a rough year for you and each bereavement adds to all the others.
You are in my heart as you grieve for beautiful Hedydd who lived a long and happy life because of you

I am so very sorry, what a dreadful time you are having.
Such a beautiful tribute to gorgeous Hedydd who certainly had a very happy life with you and all her friends.

Lovely tribute, sorry for your loss 😔. Must have had an absolute blast of a life 👍. Take care

What a very difficult year you are having, losing much loved piggies. They had the best life. A beautiful tribute. The rainbow bridge is very busy right now. Sleep peacefully sweet piggy. x

A beautiful tribute to your darling girl. What an amazingly fulfilling and long life she had with your tribe. I am so sorry for your loss.
RIP little one.💕🌈🐾

What a beautiful tribute. Some piggies leave a lasting impression on you and she was one of those. Huge hugs. Popcorn free beautiful lady x

So sorry that Hedydd has gone over the rainbow bridge. She sounds like such an amazing piggie and must have been so rewarding to have in your life.

Hello @Wiebke
Taken a while to reply cos I can't text with damp eyes.
You don't need me to tell you how wonderful you are with your piggies and on here helping when you can others as you have me.
I know if you had the money and space you would collect all the piggies in the world and give them the @Wiebke love and treatment.
What I will say my dear you have given Rainbow World some beautiful loved piggies and i and my 3 girls send you and you're piggie lots :luv:
David. xx

Thinking of you at this very sad time - end of an era, but what an era it was. Huge hugs xx

A moving and lovely tribute. It's never easy letting go, even when expected at the end of a long and full life. Gorwedd mewn hedd Hedydd bach. Gyda cydymdeimlad dwys. (Rest in peace little Skylark. With deep sympathy.)

Diolch mawr! All last four Tribe ladies were actually real Welsh piggies: Hedydd and Heulwen from South Wales and Ffwlbri and her niece Tegan from a now defunct rescue in Midwales. ;)

Then names sound very Lord of the rings names. I think they did use Welsh in it, I'm not sure. Or it was inspired by

What a difficult period it’s been for you. So sorry for your loss(es). I hope you find comfort in knowing she’s with her friends again. And that you gave them ALL a wonderful life filled with love. Remember to take care of yourself too 💕

How beautiful your little family of Guinea pigs! I am sure that every single one of your Guinea pigs have brought you laughter, joy and tons of love. I am so sorry you have lost so many of your babies at once. I can't even imagine. I am sure that you gave your Guinea pigs a full and happy life. My Guinea pig is 5 and I know how much I love love him. I am so sorry. I hope the rest of your little Guinea pig family will bring you much happiness and love. Aren't they the most precious little animals. Big hugs! From me and Timmy the Canadian Guniea pig.

Sleep tight beautiful lady, I'm so glad I got to meet you before you left us. Sending huge hugs Wiebke xx

Sorry for your loss W, :( longevity must be a ginger thing, my little lady is 7 and still going strong!

My piggy names are all Welsh. My husband is a Welshman. ;)
Tolkien was inspired by Welsh for his Elves the way he used a Finnish for his dwarves. ;)
