My much loved 'Black Pearl' Mererid has sadly made her journey to the Rainbow Bridge in the very late evening hours after going into organ failure on Tuesday, just 9 days before her 8th birthday. She's beaten Tegan to be the Tribe piggy longest with me by just a few days.

Considering her background as a Rainbow Ark baby born to a highly pregnant newly rescued sow in very bad state, it is a bit of a miracle that she and her litter sister Morwenna (who is still with me) have been able to enjoy such a long life; especially as I lost the third sister of the Triplets, Myfina, way back over Christmas 2017.

Merry (rescue name Merryweather, Tribe name Mererid i.e. Margaret 'Pearl') and her sisters Myfina 'Myfi' (Flora) and Morwenna 'Menna' (Fauna) were born at TEAS on 24th February 2014. Between the three of them, they all had a different combination of two out of three breeds in play; Myfina even had a half-hearted aby rosette on top of a mix of smooth/American and teddy. Merry was the smooth/Aby mix and the one least affected her heritage of long standing indiscriminate inbreeding and high stress.

She was also the naughtiest of the three lively sisters that managed to keep their step-daddy boar-cum nursery nurse Bedo having all his paws full for a goodly while while bounding after him or crying out for him to get them out of whatever scrape they'd gotten themselves into this time. For some reason, Mererid took a fancy to my slipper soles and was forever nibbling at the soles and tugging on any bows. I had to be extremely careful moving around and especially never stepping back blindly because she was very much a nosy 'underfoot' piggy.

A quick peck for her best daddy!

After losing their made up but very close-knit Tribe family of seven bit by bit over the intervening years, Merry and Menna became very close in older age. Morwenna would sadly not accept any new boar or companion after Bedo's passing in 2018 although Mererid quite liked Dylan but chose to not over-rule her beloved but fear-aggressive sister.

As an old lady, Merry loved to spend the day and often the night, too, being burrowed in a pile of hay, just poking her head out for her meals. She did come though an emergency spaying op well aged 5 years.

I know that I am absolutely blessed for having had Merry in my life for double the time I expected the Triplets to be with me at the most; but it also means a lot more pain over a stronger bond finally cut off...

Thank you.

Unlike you, Mererid has simply got gradually frailer for a while now so it was more of a matter of whether she would be able to hang on in there long enough for my own gratification to celebrate a rare landmark birthday or not. I have been able to do quite a bit of my grieving 'homework' over the last months and weeks, except the bit about the pain of the actual loss and getting used to no longer having her around; the 'missing her' bit is the harder one because she was one of my more insistent beggars and one of my my more favourite piggies - but that is something that only time can soften and heal as you slowly learn to readjust your daily routine and have gradually less jarring reminders of your loss; that's why I try to be grateful for having had her in my life for so long first and foremost. Only a few of my piggies live to such a great age, so it is always a special blessing when they do.

After losing about 50 piggies or so over the course of many years, a comparatively peaceful natural death from old age is no longer a traumatising event for me, just something I am relieved about when I do not have to race a piggy to the vets for pts/euthanasia. If I need time out from the forum for grieving or feel unable to post on certain threads , I will do this to protect myself, rest assured! I have done so in the past and no doubt will do so in the future. ;)

I'm sorry that you have lost your beloved girl. She really did have the best life with you and her friends. Sending big hugs.

Sleep well Mererid.💕🌈🐾
