Adult Guinea Pig
I adopted Hector from Anna at Wheek and Squeak as a new friend for Spike when he lost his friend Stripes. They were introduced in a run in the garden where Anna and I sat watching them to see how they were getting on. They were so sweet, they sat side by side, front paws up resting on a brick which was in the run, happily watching the neighbours!
It was that day that changed everything, I took Spike to find a friend and ended up bring 4 piggies home!
Hector lived with Spike and Bob for a good 6 months, we decided to take a chance with a trio as Spike and Bob were so laid back and everything was going very well. Unknown to us at the time Bob had been misdiagnosed as diabetic. When he started loosing lots of weight it was a conversation in passing with Karen from the Reading rescue that made me worm him. With in 48 hours Bob was putting on weight and he started to become a lively, cheeky little pig. The change in Bob was amazing but this confident, healthy little pig decided he wanted to be the boss now so sadly the trio came to an end.
A year ago Hector was neutered and went back to Anna to choose a girlfriend. 4 hours and 8 ladies latter he finally decide Matilda was the lady for him.
Hector and Matilda lived (mostly!) happily together for a year with Piglet ( a 6 year old sow adopted from a friend) joining them this February after loosing her sister.
On the morning of Wednesday 11 April I gave the piggies their breakfast but Hector wouldn't eat. He just wanted to hide his head in the hay. I took him straight to the vet who suspected a brain tumour. His senses had become so heightened that he couldn't stand to be touched and the light was too bright for him. The girls went with him to keep him company and sat washing his eyes while we waited to see the vet. The only signs I'd seen before that morning that anything was wrong was that he was scratching a lot so I'd treated him for lice and when that didn't work, treated him for mites. I feel like I should of spotted something earlier but he'd not lost weight and had appeared to be fine until that morning, it was all so sudden. Hector started fitting every 10 seconds and was clearly very distressed so I made the very sad decision to help him to the bridge as the vet (who's very experienced with pigs) could only offer to try and make him more comfortable but didn't think there was anything we could do for him. He was 3 1/2 years old
Mr Wrigglebottom your ladies and I are missing you.
I'm extra sad because I'd only told him the night before that he was going to have another lady join his little herd. She's still coming to join the girls but I wanted to wait to see how they were after loosing Hector so that will be in a few weeks time.
Popcorn free and wriggle your gorgeous bum at all the ladies at the bridge, you were so good at it!
I've hardly got any good photos of Hector, he was always on the go, so much to do, lots of piggies to wiggle your bum at but here's a couple of my favourites.
