On Sept 9, 2017 Smudgee showed zero interest in eating her morning veggies, she was perfectly fine the night before (so I thought) since she was eating before I went to bed. Since this is an usual behavior for a guinea pig I drove to the Exotic Vet and got her to see the doctor.

I was there for a couple of hours, he did a physical, put her in a oxygen tank and took several X-rays. He showed me the X-rays and she had several masses in her body along with bloat. He suspected it was cancer, but couldn't do a blood test since guinea pigs need anesthesia to draw blood and she was to weak. The next step was to get a ultra sound, but his office didn't perform ultrasounds and next available appointment I could get was on September 11, 2017 an hour away. Plus their office was close the next day. He sent me home with pain meds for her.

I ended up taking her home and started calling around to cavy savy people I knew. I ended up syringe feeding and massaging her (for her bloat) every hour on the hour throughout the night and into the morning.

On Sept 10 between the hours of 630am - 7am she crossed the rainbow bridge. I fed her at 6 am and gave her a 15 minute massage and was able to rub her belly one last time. I went back to sleep and at 7am I went to give her hourly feeding and saw her body lifeless, I knew she passed. It was an exhausting night.

Smudgee had a rough start at life, she lived outside in a cardboard box with little shade by herself. She almost became snake food, but I rescued her. Her last years was spent in a herd, living in a piggie mansion and eating quality food. She was well loved and was surrounded by her herd during her last moments.

Oh I'm so sorry for your loss Popcorn free Smudgee

Thank you. It took me some time to put a tribute video together because I affected by her passing but now I know she is up there with Peanut who was the original herd leader.

Its so sad to lose a piggy. No matter how hard you try it is just their time to cross the Bridge. She didn't have a very good start in life and you gave her some lovely last years to live with some friends and a lovely piggy slave.

I am so sorry for your loss. With internal growths you often only notice too late as they don't show any symptoms in the early stages; usually only once they impact on other organs and the pain is causing loss of appetite/weight. :(

RIP Smudgee

She was a gorgeous piggy. So glad that you rescued her from horrendous conditions and shared the good times and your loving care with her and the herd. X

So sorry for your loss. I know how hard it is to find your piggy after they've passed.. It's obvious you loved her very much and did everything you could for her :hug:I'm glad she got to be rescued by someone who cared for her so well, and that she got to know what love was before she passed

Thank you. That is the one thing that gives me comfort knowing she had a happy life, being part of a large herd and big habitat. She was no longer by herself

I'm so sorry for your loss.

RIP smudgee xx

Thank you for the kind words

I keep replaying the past couple of weeks if I saw any signs and I didn't. I also do daily physical checks for masses on all my girls. The night before I went to bed I didn't see any change in behavior. She ate her night time veggies and two hours later she ate her night time pellets the night before.

I keep asking myself if there was anything else I could of done differently.

Thank you. She was a beautiful girl.

I'm sorry for your loss.
