It’s taken me a few days to bring myself to be able to post this tribute to our little Miss Evie. We lost her to a sudden and severe bloat on the Tuesday before last.
Evie joined us in September 2019. Before her surrender to the rescue she had lived all her life alone as a wrongly sexed boar and the victim of poor advice about boars being kept on their own
. She came to join us as companion for Felix (rescued in May 2019 from appalling conditions in a children’s farm) after the loss of his special needs wife, Angel. Evie was 2. Confident, opinionated and not afraid to make her needs, wants and dislikes clearly known.
Here she is meeting Felix for the first time at the rescue

And then settling in nicely as his wife.

After Felix’s untimely passing she accepted Iris as her co-conspirator and the pair of them were almost always up at the bars seeking attention and begging for treats. Evie was a champion bar biter and bar rattler and was not afraid of giving a sharp nip to anything or anyone that gave her displeasure……
When Boris got stranded with us, while serving his 6 weeks wait post neuter and caught up in Covid Lockdown, Evie and Iris accepted him as their husboar. But only if he stayed well out of sight and didn’t challenge their supremacy.
Despite her failing eyesight, she remained the leader of her little trio with both Iris and Boris trailing in her wake.
When Hazel found herself alone after the loss of Ralph and then Holly last year, Evie accepted her into their herd. She was the undisputed boss, always claiming the best house but seldom causing any drama. She left that for Hazel and Iris (who are still sparring for position to this day), with Boris falling into bottom spot in the pecking order.

This was Evie’s last grouping. Apart from a hay poke earlier in the year, she was in good health for an older lady. She went slightly off on the Sunday, was hospitalised with acute bloat at 9am Monday and put to sleep at 2pm on Tuesday. Although the end was so unpleasant for her, I am comforted that it came on suddenly and didn’t last a moment longer than necessary. She was at least 5 1/2 and for the last 3 1/2 years she had piggy company and the best life I could give to her.
I am really missing this feisty little Madam. It’s now safe to sweep the cage without fearing a nip to the inside of the wrist. I can safely put my hand into any bed without fear of a nip. The teatime and breakfast chorus are only slightly quieter but there’s no bar biting and rattling. And no exposed tummy that I can tickle before putting the veggies into the cage.

Farewell Madam Evie. Queen of the Piggy Room. Quiet controller of the herd. Bar rattler supreme. Builder of hay nests and tunnels. Owner of the best bed. I’m sure you are having a blast at the Rainbow Bridge.
