I had my boys neutered yesterday, Kristoff is doing great, but Olaf is still breathing really fast and shallow. I can see his belly going in and out and it is very different than all of my other pigs. He is eating and pooping, but just doesn’t look as good as Kristoff. I’m going to call the vet after I take my daughter to school but wanted to see if anyone here had advice or experience too. He is about 16 hours post-op right now.

Rapid breathing can be a sign of pain, it is also possible he may have inhaled a little fluid during the opp which would mean he will need antibiotics and diuretics, so i would take him to the vets without delay to be safe. Fingers crossed it is not serious

I have a call in to the vet, my vet works later hours today so he was not in yet. I know Olaf had a hard time waking up from the anesthesia and the vet held him on his lap for 45 min after surgery

The vet checked every inch of him, he said his lungs sound clear, his heart was beating a little fast but sounded good and his eyes look bright. He checked his incision and said it looks great too. Basically he thinks Kristoff is just dealing with the pain better than Olaf. He said to keep the pain meds in him and he should perk up in the next few days. I guess I’m just an overly worried piggie mom! I’m so glad I found this vet though, he is awesome. He even let my 5 year old listen to Olaf’s heart with his stethoscope!

Dear Olaf

We hope you get better quickly! Don't worry your piggie Mum/slave too much. You can get over this! We did. Now we live with 3 wifelets and share them between us. You will have to wait for another 6 weeks before you can go in with your wifelet(s) but we promise you it is worth the wait! We are routing for you! You will be fine.

Love from
Christian and Dennis

PS Our slave has a soft spot for you. She thinks you are cuuuuuuuuuuuute and if you didn't live so far away would probably pignap you!

You are too funny! Everyone at the vets office fell in love with Olaf too, there is just something about that little guy!

So you have 2 boys in with 3 girls? That is what I’m hoping to do once the boys are ready. They are brothers and have been able to see the girls through the bars ever since they were separated, so I’m hoping they were all kept together enough to reunite peacefully. I have a 2x6 c&c cage with a small 2nd floor and I have space to add two grids to the main floor so I will probably do that too.

I do but it's certainly not recommended! Normally if you have more than 1 boar in with females they fight. I am just very lucky I have one big happy family and everyone is really close. I do have a Plan B just in case and am on a constant look out for any changes in dynamics. It only works cos Dennis and Christian are brothers who were EXTREMELY well bonded and I also have a VERY dominant sow who takes no cr*p from anybody and keeps everyone in order. It's not for the faint hearted!

My boys are very close too and their mom Elsa rules the girls, so maybe I can be lucky like you! If not, I have enough room to split them up and see which groups work the best. I’m just glad the boys are on the mend and I won’t have to worry about anyone getting pregnant accidentally now

Well it's really up to you. Like I said it's not recommended at all. Everyone is amazed that I have had no fall outs so far and they have been together for 18 months. That is why when I got them a new hutch I went for a two storey one again so that I can separate them into 2 sows and a boar and a sow and a boar if necessary. I would just have to work out who would go with who. I think it would be Dennis and Betsy, then Christian, Velvet and Meg. Dennis is the underboar and I don't think he would cope well without Betsy who is 2nd in command to Velvet. Meg is very timid and I can't see her coping without Velvet's guidance.
