hello,

i took my girls out to play last night and noticed that Currant looked alot wider round the middle than the other two. they are all eating and drinking well but i am worried that Currant might have a tumor as my last guinea pig Parsnip died of a tumor. put Parsnip was a lot older, Currant has only just turned one.

i have an appointment with the vets tomorrow but i just wondered if anyone had any ideas. she can't be pregnant as she lives with two girls. i felt her tummy and it doesn't feel like there any lumps.

i am hoping that she is just fat and i am being over paranoid!

thanks

Cat

i would say she is just chubby as tumors aren't very common,I'm not sure some other members will have to help clue you in on what it might be but my bet is Chunky piggy xxxxx
P.S as i have been told piggies rarely over eat as the are grazers so she is probably just finishing her growing,if she is only a year old that would be it i think x

thanks,

i am hoping this is the case! i will let you know how i get on at the vets. i am seeing the really nice vet tomorrow. she always used to say how lovely my rabbit was and that he was in great condition and very friendly xx>>>

this is my 5 month old piggy Smokey and he is considered a healthy weight.although he is my big chubba xxxxx

Smokey is big for his age,he was normal size at 3 months and then grew into this, your girl may have had a last growth spurt goodluck at the vets I'm hoping for a good report xxxxx

A number of things can lead to a distended abdomen. I had a piggie with a kidney tumour myself so can sympathise entirely with your thoughts, but it is very unlikely to be a tumour.

Bloat and ovarian cysts are the more common causes of a swollen tummy. If she is bloated, her abdomen will feel tight and springy, and she will find having her tummy touched very sensitive and painful. Ovarian cysts can often be felt just by palpating the tummy; treatment for these is not surgery, but hormone injections and, if necessary, draining the cysts via a needle in the abdomen - so if cysts are found you do not need to put her through a spay.

Of course, as you and Bonnie have suggested, she may just be chubby. What does she weigh? I found that once my piggies hit 18-24 months or so, even the most solid and strudy of my "chunky" piggies (i.e. those with no notable fat on them, but still heavy and chunky) developed love-handles, the weight seemed to appear from nowhere. :))

hello,

well i went to the vets on saturday. i took all three girls so they didn't get too stressed in the car.

the vet examined her and then she examined the others. luckily she is just larger than the other two! the vet was lovely and she said thank you for bringing the other two down so that she had a comparison. she also said that they all had lovely little faces :)

i am one relieved piggy owner :))
