I'm posting this on behalf of a friend. She has a 5 month old rex boar (Eddie) who has fatty eyes - one is much worse than the other. He's going to be neutered to live with a group of ladies and my friend asked the vet if anything could be done about his eyes - she's worried they will get worse. The vet said he knows nothing about the condition but will try to do some research. Does anyone know if it is possible to operate for this condition - or alternatively any treatment..........?
The only ones I've ever come across have never bothered the pig so have been left alone but this is much worse.................
Thankyou.........

The only advice i can give is to find a different vet, who is cavvy savy, i wouldn't have my pig operated on there if the vet needs to do research about something else guinea pig related - this just screams not exotic or experienced guinea pig vet to me, and neutering is something to be done by a good vet. I see you are in suffolk, where is your friend? I am in Norwich and cannot rate Taverham surgery highly enough and others on here will agree with me, i had my boy "done" there 3 years ago and is was a total success, the pre and post op care was second to none.

Good luck xx

This vet has neutered loads of piggies - some of which were mine and all have been absolutely fine but I agree with you - I wouldn't let him do anything he clearly knows nothing about mallethead

Wonder if you could give me a contact number for the vet you mentioned - you can pm it to me if you'd rather not post it on here. My friend lives about an hour from Norwich and I'm sure she'd be happy to take Eddie for them to have a loook at............and thankyou xx>>>

To be honest, unless it is really bothering the piggie then i wouldnt bother with the eyes. I would have thought that you could take off some of the tissue in the conjunctiva using diathermy surgery. I had a baby pig have some conjunctival surgery a few months back, so I'm assuming it can be done, its just a case if its necessary.

Several of my piggies have fatty eye and if he is happy and otherwise healthy i would leave alone.Dont have any GP surgery unless its totally unavoidable. Some breeds are more susceptible than others xx Hope that helps.

I'd just leave it if it isn't bothering the pig. I did with mine when he had it in both eyes and he was fine
