Can anyone offer me any advice please. One of my pigs, Ben, has had fatty eye for a while now. I've just given my pigs their daily veg and noticed that his eye was bulging more than usual and it looks red and very sore. Its just the inner eyelid part, not his actual eye that looks sore. He seems ok in himself, he was just as keen for his veg. I took a closer look and he did have a tiny bit of hay in his eye and it seemed to come out when he washed himself. I'm taking him to the vets tomorrow but was just wondering if anyone had any advice on what it could be. He's approx 3 years old and is quite a big pig at 1300g. He's usually in good health apart from having a cyst under his chin which hasn't grown for a year. It's not a good time for my pigs this week, 2 of my girls have just got over a tummy upset. Thanks in advance for any advice.

fatty eye doesn't normally become red and sore, that can be down to a hay poke/infection which can cause an ulcer in the eye/infection, sounds like he needs antibiotic eye drops x

thats great drops only cost around £4 if left untreated it will become really painful, i had a guinea in rescue here and his eye was left untreated and it shriveled up :( if the vet sez they will give him Baytril say no you just want fucidic eye drops, as baytril i find is best used IF they really need it due to other infections as it can affect their gut and make him more ill so best used IF really needed along with probiotics, there is no need for Baytril the eye drops will clear it fine x

Will do, thanks a lot. I think I've had them before when Crumble (Rip) had conjunctivitis. My vet is usually pretty good and I've had experience before with Baytril and gastric stasis with Bramble ( not nice, I nearly lost him). Thanks so much for your help. :)

Had Ben to the vets today. Vet said it looks like a really bad case of conjunctivitis. Has given him antibiotic eye drops. He said if it doesn't clear up in a week he needs to go back for steroid drops and worse case scenario after that is that there might be a growth behind his eye. After I gave him the first dose his eye bled, the vet said he maybe had an ulcer or blood clot behind there and the pressure made it burst. He seems fine in himself and he never bled after his second dose tonight. It still looks very sore and inflamed though and it must feel itchy cos he was scratching it too which can't be helpful. I'm keeping a very close eye on him and hopefully the antibiotics will have an effect soon. :)

Well Bens eye is looking a bit scabby this morning so i'm presuming that's a good sign and its starting to dry up a bit. He's still eating etc ok so hopefully he's on the mend. :)

Thanks for that claire. I've tried again, I've never used photobucket before so hopefully this has worked ok. Bens eye looks a lot better today anyway but i thought you might be interested to see how it looked yesterday. Thanks again :)
