Fatty eye?

Hmm. It's hard to say if he has it. Naturally his eyes 'are' red and I'm not sure quite what to look for. I do have more pics/closer pics, of his eyes...

From what I can see your pig does not have fatty eye at all. His eyes are naturally red in colour.

If the tissue surrounding the eye, which would normally be hidden under the lids, protrudes then that could be the start of fatty eye or a slight infection causing inflamation. The tissue will be swollen and red if it is infection, requiring treatment. If the tissue is pale and the eyelid just looks a bit 'saggy' then this is more likely to be fatty eye.

It is always a good idea as part of their weekly health check to assess the eyes.

I agree with Suzy, I can't see any evidence of fatty eye. Uusually there would be a buldge or saggy look to the eyelid. Looking at the photo on the other threat, it just looks as though his pupils were a little dilated from the camera flash which may make the eye look slightly different, maybe what that is what Claremw92 meant?

It looks to me from your photos that he's one of those pigs that can show a bit of the white of their eyeball like this little one (aawwww!)

So I concur with Suzy and Claire as fatty eye is obvious when you know, from experience, what to look for.

This is Beech (RIP) with his fatty eye - see how the lower eyelid droops pemanently and the tissue protrudes up from behind the lid...

It can look similar to conjunctivitis when the tissue behind the eyelid gets inflamed and then also swells/reddens..but in that case it is temporary and once treated, usually the swelling disappears and the eyelid reverts to normal.

Hope this puts your mind at rest.

Fatty eye or conjunctivitis?

My 10 month old male guinea pig Barney has like a wee bit of red tissue underneath the top lid of his left eye which you can only see when you lift his lid up. I only noticed it tonight. Was thinking omf getting my vet to check it out, do you think I should?

Thanks,
Lins
PS could post a pic of it if needed.

I have had 2 pigs have this, I am not sure if other members can confirm this but it has devloped in their older age in both my pigs. One ended up being given eye drops as her eye was dry, but it never really bothered them.
