Hi everyone,

My gizmo has been having problems with his teeth again :-( he's had to have them burghed (spelling?) again today but he has lost a lot of weight. He has wooden chews in cage to help keep his teeth down.

Can anyone recommend any good veggies that will help fatten him up? Or even anything I can do to help him gain weight and keep his teeth down?

Thank you

The most fattening thing for pigs is pellets. Could you mix pellets with hot water and see if he will eat it as a mash?

He's happy to eat solids...but do you think he may get more if it's mashed?

I might try offer a bowl of mash and a bowl of pellets to him. See which he prefers.

Have you thought of travelling a little further for a good vet ?
Simon Maddock at the cat and rabbit clinic in Northampton is fabulous, it would be well worth the travel to have your guinea seen there to see exactly what is going just in case your vet is getting it wrong as many do as they don't really know the correct angle of guineas teeth.

The best way to keep his crucial back teeth down is hay and lots of fibre. I would rather recommend - as long as your piggy hasn't got bladder problems - to give him a pinch of rich readigrass and slightly more pellets that any empty calories. Once his teeth are sorted and he is back to eating normally again (which can take some time), the weight should come up on its own.

I'm feeding a pellet mash to my Phoebe at the moment who has a bruised jaw, and it is supposed to help the weight go back on, she is having pellets and all her usual hay, etc too but it is slow progress. I second the recommendation to see Simon too, Phoebe saw him on Friday.

Thank you guys. This is the second vet we have seen so we are hoping this one is better. If not I will look at seeing Simon but I don't have a car so it would have to be only if this vet doesn't do a good job. I will try get him some readigrass today too.
