I have had my pigggies checked by the vets because of lumps.

all is fine, Marty Pig has a benign cyst that just needs monitoring, Caramel only has one tiny fatty lump but Barbra has loads of fatty lumps. Poor little girl must have felt like a pin cushion as each one was checked :(

anyhow the vet didn't have any advice on what to do to minimise them. does anyone know what forms them and if there is anything I can do to stop them getting bigger or better still get rid of them?

thanks in advance xx>>>

Hi hun,

Was just about to write an post about the exact same thing and I saw yours!
Great news that the cyst was benign!

I found a lump by Teddy's nipple yesterday, I took him straight to vet and she did a biopsy. Results will be in a few days. She said she was uncertain what it was but that she had seen a few cases like this before.
This evening while giving him a cuddle i have just seen another lump on the side of his chest, same side as the other. I am now soooo worried and scared :0, and waiting to phone the vet first thing.
Seeing your post has reassured me a little that it could just be fatty lumps rather than the dreaded C word. 8...

The vet did say (and she is very cavy savvy and not quick to unneccs operate) that the only way to remove them is surgery. She did however say that if the lump didnt seem to bother him than it probably could stay there. Of the pigs she has operated on she said they made a great recovery.

Sorry for hijaking your post, but would also be really grateful for any advice or reassurance.
Thank you
Saysie x

Phoned the vet this morning, and she said to wait for the results of the first biopsy before she see's him again. Should be in before the weekend so fingers crossed!

I'm at the Vet with Milo tonight he has a lump the same place as your pig. Has your pig been neutered?

Yes he has, and the vet said that would probably reduce his chances even more of it being cancer, being a boy also helps.
Good luck! Just to warn you the vet may want to do a needle biopsy, she said Teddy was very good and he was fine after so dont think upsets them too much.
Hope it goes ok tonight x

I remember having a cat with a fatty lump during childhood, it would always concern me-particularly as a teen, but the vet always dismissed it at his check ups saying it was nothing to worry about, it never increased in size, and it never caused him any pain when touched etc. The advice was to leave well alone, not much we could do to get rid of it etc, and as it wasn't causing him any harm it was left...

He lived until 15, which is quite good for a Siamese, and eventually developed problems completely unrelated to the lump which we ended up having him PTS for. It is possible that your piggy may just have a harmless fatty lump...although I know how alarming it is to feel when you cuddle him.

Most piggies get the "odd" fatty lump. Some seem to get an "explosion"

Ginger had a load of small lumps and because, at the time, we had good reason to think they were malignant; the vet elected to remove as many as he could. So in essence Ginger had liposuction

Luckily they were all found to be benign lipomas.

Subsequently, he had to have 4 weeks intensvie care in the vets because the wound created from the surgery refused to heal (because ginger kept ripping open his stitches!)

If they are lipomas - then let them be untill they start to interfere wth the piggies normal way of life. However don;t leave it too long before an op is necessary...

Thank you both! Feeling a lot more reassured that it might just be fatty lumps, and because they dont seem to be bothering him I wont have to put him through surgery.
Thank you! x

Well the vet has just phoned at the biopsy result were not cancerous *phew!*, and they are fatty lumps but she said they have an infection in there.
She is going to put him on rimadyl (sp) and baytril, I asked for some fibreplex too has had a very bad experience with a piggie and baytril! I am to take him back end of next week, so she can see how he is responding to meds and see what to do next.
