Over a week ago I decided to take Fauna (GP) to the vets. I was convinced she had ovarian cysts. She had started to lose her hair, crusty nipples, losing weight, mounting everything in sight, drinking loads and had developed a most definite pear shape.
Due to hearing a few things 'behind the scenes' from my exisiting vet, I decided to try a new practice - What a mistake pow-pow
The vet examined Fauna, and decided that she couldn't be sure that it was ovarian cysts. She gave her a course of Baytril - as she believed her temp was a little high, asked me to get a urine sample and said that she would need to do a full blood test and refer her to another practice for an ultrasound. The vet could barely speak English and I wasn't content at all, especially when she gave Fauna a massive bruise with the first part of the Baytril injection and blew the syringe when trying to give her the second half :o
I decided that I wouldn't go back and rang round a few surgeries to get her booked in somewhere else. I eventually made an appnt and took Fauna to see another vet. He was amazed that the previous vet couldn't feel Fauna's ovarian cysts as he said they were very large. He also discovered a very large bladder stone that was in her urinary tract that she was trying to pass - poor little soul
Due to Fauna's age, the vet was reluctant to operate or spay so instead he gave her a brief shot of gas (forget the proper name) and gave her the hormone implant. He also got her bladder stone out - it was huge ! He had to push it back up her urinary tract, crush it and then pick it out in pieces. He gave her pain relief while she was coming round from the gas and I've got Metacam to give her twice a day.
Poor little Fauna had a rough day but I'm so glad I went with my gut feeling - if I'd stayed with the first vet, who knows what may have happened rolleyes
