Hi I fed my Guinea pig sweetheart cabbage but it was in the spring onions and I didn’t realise because I’m not to well atm worried about them should I be worried ?

I'd you washed the cabbage they should be absolutely fine, spring onions are also quite mild onions. Some people even believe the green parts are safe to feed ( not that I would do so, being lucky not to cause a GI upset isn't necessarily the same as being safe and beneficial to feed after all!) and experience no ill effects.

As a child my neighbours used to drop off bags of cabbage scraps, carrot peels etc along with potato peelings, onion skins and offcuts and I must admit being young, it didn't occur to me to wash them, I just picked out the bits they couldn't eat and fed the rest and no harm caused. I would think any pieces smelling strongly of onion would be ignored anyway, they can be rather clever when they want to be!

Make sure you give them lots abd lots of hay, and uts unlikely you will see any problems, don't worry. If you have any probiotics like fiberplex it also wouldn't hurt to give them some, but its not completely necessary.

Occasionally mine have eaten something they shouldn't and the signs are usually that they eat less, hunch up, and hide away... but this has only usually been temporary, like a few hours. Only once was it serious (not eating and lying on her side!) and overnight of course - on this occasion I intervened by getting up every few hours to syringe her a little support food and she was luckily back to normal the next day as it had passed through. I thought she'd be a gonner but it was like nothing had happened. I knew what it was - I'd caught her eating something in the garden that was actually mouldering! If yours are behaving normally and eating as usual you can relax a bit.

One of mine did eat a bunch of chives in the garden over about 5 days and I never noticed a thing until I went to get some on the Friday and couldn't understand where they'd gone. Turned out the raised bed wasn't raised enough! There was also a bunch of 'garlic chives' which were completely untouched so she had some standards at least. The mouldering plant my other girl chewed at was planted very high but the long stalks had been frosted and collapsed over the edge of the bed - that's how we got caught out. It hasn't happened twice...

Hi

No need to worry at all.

Bulb plants should not be fed and definitely not be part of a regular diet but they don't contain any contact poison.
A piggy would have to eat a whole lot of spring onion, chives or even onion (or like mine, crocus leaves on the lawn) before it would become a serious problem. Just a little one-off nibble is not an issue with all these, either. ;)

They will be okay for a bit without hay, although don't let them go without hay for more than 24 hours. Do you have pellets that contain hay? If not, just provide them with vitamin c because they can't produce their own. You can get same day delivery from PetSmart if you pay the delivery fee. Just keep an eye on them

They can hack a day; just give them more pellets for calories tonight.

Any longer, and it starts getting problematic because hay makes over three quarters of what a piggy eats in a day; they need the silica in the hay to keep the teeth from overgrowing and the gut from ticking along nicely. Pellets do not contain enough fibre to be a long term substitute.
