Sorry for so many questions guys but these are my first piggies and I really want to get things right! Have asked vets and pet shops but the answers are always so vague!

I've been feeding them a dry mix - Gerty Guinea Pig mix but they just pick out the bits they like and loads of it ends up being thrown away. I also worry that they're not getting the right balance of vits if they're only eating a limited selection of it. I've been told that there's a pellet feed which contains everything they need, all wrapped up in a single pellet form so they can't avoid certain parts of it! Would you recommend I change them onto this?

Also, with regards to fresh green food, how much should they have? At the moment the two girls are getting one large leaf of greens each day, about 3 brocolli florets and 4 - 5 little carrot batons. They also go out onto the grass weather permitting for a couple of hours. They are very 'petite' piggies but is this enough?

Hi

If you feed nuggets like Wagg or Excel then they can't selectively feed. By feeding a mix, some piggies will just pick out the bits they like, which is like children just eating the chips and not the peas!

As regards to veg, look at the shopping list at the top of the Feeding section, there's lots of good ideas of what can be fed daily and what should only be fed occasionally. A cup full amount of veggies per piggy per day would be about right.

hello i would definantly recommend you change to pellets, some members on here will advise on good brands i don't know as i dont live in the uk,guinea pigs need more variety than 2 veges, brocolli is reasonably high in calcium so maybe one floret per day with other veges instead the guinea pig shopping list in the food section will help with what you can feed them its a sticky in the top section,a few things you can try are cucumber, bell peppers, bok choy, corn, beans, snow peas, cauliflour leaves and lettuce(except iceberg) have a look at the list just remember everything in moderation and fruit in small amounts or as a treat
also make sure they have plenty of fresh hay available at all timesxxxxxxxxx

just next time you post a thread make sure you put it in the appropriate section like this one should be in the food section, its just that with this in health and illness it makes it hard for members to get to helping sick piggies quicklyxxxxxxx

Thanks peeps - brill advice as usual! Forgot to say they also get dust extracted meadow hay on a daily basis too.

The food section wasn't there today(?). I only had 3 sections on my Home page and that was Health & Illness, Guinea Pig Rehoming and Chit Chat. Maybe there's something wrong with my PC or maybe the forum was having a 'moment'! Mods, please feel free to move this - thanks

I've asked for it to be moved...

Sounds like you're not logged in properly? If you can't see them all (I can!) then contact a moderator - there's a list at the top of the board

Can see them all now mallethead Might be my PC. Tried logging out and back in again but still only had 3 sections! OK now though, but if it happens again I'll contact a Mod before posting. Thanks x

Good luck! Hopefully you can now access all the info on here, otherwise ask!
