Can any one tell me if I am feeding the right amounts for my 2 guinea pigs,I have cut them back on their burgess excel as they where not eating much hay.

70g burgess excel between them

small hay rack and a big Critter's Choice Chube full of good quality hay

plus a broccoli or small hand full of veg/fruit

is it 70% of hay and the rest pellets and veg?

Hi trying to look for the % that is done in a pyramid for the feeding guide, can anyone help!

how old & big are you guineas? george is only about 3 months or less and he eats about 20 grams of nuggets each day. It is his choice as feed him 30 and he only every eats 20 max. he eats nearly his entire hay rack a day and also I give his either half a largish carrot or half a stick of celery. I am yet to try any other veggies as yet as only had him a while and it takes a while for him to try things.

Usually just sniffs new veg then ignores it I take it out next morning as gone withered and then try again that evening takes 3/4 days for him to pluck up the courage to even bite the new food!

80% hay, 15% veggies and 5% pellets. I don't weigh food. Just a handful of pellets a day. 5 different veggies and a handful of hay each which is enough for my lot, I used to give 2 handfuls but it was wasted. I give 1/2 in morning and 1/2 in evening per pig. :)

Just a little confused as my friend put loads and loads of hay, the do bury themselfs in it as well as eat it.
But I use the more exspensive hay and they still dont eat all that I give them. If you use better quality hay, do they eat less of it?

Mine are about 5 months old

Generally yes, the better quality hay is more filling with more nutrients. As long as they have some hay left over after 24 hours (when you come to put fresh in) then you are giving them enough. The important thing is that they never run out of hay, and that at least some of that is fresh hay held in a hay rack (away from pee and poops).
Many people put in a lot of hay for bedding as well as for eating.

Yes, mine get hay on the bottom of their cage for playing/doing their business in and then I have a hay rack for the stuff I would prefer them to eat - however, they also like eatting the yucky stuff. rolleyes

Mine get a fresh bowl of dry food in the morning - and if necessary, it gets topped up at night but it rarely needs it.

Thanks everyone, I am just worried if I give them too much dry food then they might not eat enough hay as the dry food will fill them up. Could this happen?

I don't actually know if guinea pigs are ever full-up - mine are always eatting. :))

They're natural grazers so will probably always eat the right amount of hay - my girls prefer having hay to dry food. They get excited when I fill up the hay rack.....but not really when I fill the dry food bowl.

On a side note to this, what veggies do * feed them every day? Whenever i go shopping i can never decide what to buy so i just wondered if you guys had regular things you gave to them with stuff like letuce and fruit for treats?

My pigs staple diet (what they get every day, and so what we buy each time we shop):

Coriander
Peppers
Cherry tomatoes
Cucumber
Lettuces - usually romaine and round, and/or lettuce mixes

Their variety comes from whatever the human family have in - like babycorn, carrot, broccoli, apple etc. - or any special treats we decide to give them (parsley, kale, dill etc.).
