It was the compromise for me and the kids to have GPS that they live outside. My husbands rule lol.

I feel guilty they're out there. What bedding stuff is safe for them? Other than hay.

Can I put a fleece blanket in there? Sorta screw it up in the corner? Or will they eat it? I do however get to bring them indoors when we have snow.

I going to get some clear tarpauling to cover over whe it rains or its windy to protect them a bit.

Fleece is fine mine all live on fleece and have fleecey beds etc.... I know a lot of people buy fleecey beds for them and you can also buy heat pads for cooler months at night, is there a outhouse or sheltered area to keep the hutch in winter?

I was using woodchips and have just changed them to fleece today....they love it! Mine are indoors...my hubby didn't get a say in it lol!

There's no reason to feel guilty if they are being looked after properly!

Mine are outside too (also hubby's rules!). This winter will be their first and I will be moving them into the garage, getting heat pads and covering them with a duvet. I have also just bought the materials (fleece, cotton, wadding) to make them snuggles sacks and cozy cups.

I still feel guilty :(

I haven't fought with him yet. But I will get an indoor cage for when snow comes. Can't go in garage as he has his motorbike in there. And I don't like the shed as full of spiders. I'd never go in there lol

My last 3 guinea pigs were kept outside, we had plenty of hay in their bed area, some vet bed and fleece. They were fine through the winter as we moved them into the shed and on summer's nights if it was cold, they had a hutch cover. When there was extreme weather we brought them inside and put news paper around the hutch. There was a cute link to making cozy fleece beds for them and you can get snuggle pouches online too.
Hope this helps a bit,
Meg xx

My piggies also live outside in a free range shed which we brought specifically for them. They have two small hutches in the shed which we fill with hay and in the winter they also have snugglesafe heat pads, fleeces, fleecy beds and cardboard boxes stuffed with hay.

Previously to this, they lived outside in a hutch. Again, the bedroom area was stuffed with hay, they had snugglesafe heat pads, fleeces, fleecy beds and cardboard boxes stuffed with hay. The hutch was insulated and we had a wind / rain cover. I would cover the front of the hutch with a thick fleece blanket over night to keep out any drafts.

In extreme weather, they do come indoors in a large dog cage (the dog cage is new for this year so I haven't tri it out yet).

I feel guilty too but my hubby is allergic to them which is why they have to live outside :(

Guinea pigs are fine living outdoors so long as it is done properly and there is the option to move them indoors or in to a shed / garage if they are really struggling withe cold.

My piggies stayed in the shed all winter last year but I brought them in in March when we had all the snow as the temperature wasn't rising at all and I noticed my piggies were spending most of their time in their sleeping areas / hutches which for me is a sign they are feeling the cold more.

Another thing you have to look out for are frozen water bottles. Wrapping the bottle in a sock will usually help with this but it is important to keep checking.

always amazes me when people say their o/h said they have to do such and such! mine would never have a say! lol. x

When my wife kept guinea pigs outside 10 years ago. She used some old carpet over the top of the shed covered with a plastic sheet or tarpaulin. It was brought down over the front on cold nights.

Mine our fine living outside, they have their hutch inside a shed. I was worried about them being cold so I ran an extension lead into the shed, so when it's cold, dark and wet, I shut the shed door, turn the light on and switch the radiator on. It's also good for changing them when it's howling a gale, as I don't have shavings blowing all over the garden. ;)

Sadly the fault is mine. We had the conversation before I got them and I agreed that they would stay outside and I was ok with that as that's what happened when I was a child. It was once I got them that I realised that I would love them to be indoors. I have tried working on him but to no avail. :(

My Dad said no piggies. A few weeks later he comes home to piggies.
When he calmed down he insisted they stayed in the conservatory. But during Winter agreed they could move to a warmer part of the house, just for the Winter. Six years later I'd say its been a long Winter, though they seem happy!

hahaha this happened to ours too, we say they slowly snuck their way fully indoors from the conservatory! Once they were in it was hard to say goodbye to them again and have them out in the conservatory.
Hopefully the same thing will happen for you too!

And now I feel more guilty :(

I have never been told my pigs have to stay outside but due to allergies and space, it sadly isn't feesable to have them indoors.

I try my best housing them in a shed and bringing them indoors in the coldest of weather but it will never be good enough :(

There's a lot of other things he doesn't get away with.

Piggies are indoors tonight as rain is due and I ran out of time today to sort tarpaulin on the hutch and I didn't want them getting wet.
