My two new pigs - Munch and Nibble - are currently living in their playpen as there is a bit more room in there. Their 2 pig hutch is built but we are building an attached and complex run. I put together a basic run this afternoon in the garden for them to get some daylight and more exercise as they just seem to hide in their box. Nibble escaped and had to be recaptured. Back in their basic run they huddled into their plastic play tube. So I eventually went to get them out. Munch was nervy but I rested him on my chest stroked him gently and he seemed okay. Nibble sat on my husband's chest, his heart pounding and my husband gently stroked him, he eventually settled and tried nibbling a shirt button but got restless again and so both boys went back into their temporary home. I just feel I have really upset them especially Nibble.
Also they are a bit wet sometimes and I am wondering if I am frightening them so much they are peeing or maybe they just get a bit damp at the back end anyway at times.
Not good not very experienced and just want pigs to be okay.

They'll generally be scared their first time running around, so the first couple days/week their instinct is to run and hide until they get used to and trust their new environment. Try not to take it personally.

:agr:. It takes a while for them to settle -so, keep up the good work.

If comtinue to be wet, I'd post a seperate thread in health and illness as we may need to look into this in more detail

Hi,

All of my guinea pigs have been nervous to start with. What we learn't to do after a bit of trial and error with our first 2 boars was to get their favourite veges (ours love kale and peppers best) and get them out for cuddle time and sit with them and feed them on our laps.

At first they did not even want to eat sitting with us (I think they thought it was some sort of trap lol) but we just kept going after they had pee'd on us enough times and started to realise that with the cuddle they got to eat. They were then so busy eating that seemed to forget where they were and settled. Once they go used to this we then started to pick them up for a cuddle without the veges. By then they were used to it and they stopped peeing and started enjoying their cuddles. They are still not 100% happy to be caught but once they are and you have them on your lap they are fine.

It just takes time and patience and remember also like humans they are all different so some are more nervous than others and will take longer.

Good luck and I hope your love and perseverance will pay off.
