Feeling guilty

I'm feeling a bit guilty about my daughter's two piggies. We got them in July so they were in their hutch just outside our patio doors so we could see them all the time. They were regularly put out on to the grass in their run so we could see them and go and talk to them. However, at the moment they're residing in their hutch in a concrete outhouse. I have to leave the door ajar for them as there's no ventilation there otherwise. Obviously, they're not getting as much attention as they should, apart from feeding twice a day and having their heat pad put in of a night.

Is there any way that I could bring them in when I'm at home and have some sort of indoor run for them? I don't have the heating on during the day and I wondered what I could put them in and if it would be good for them to come in during the day?

Any thoughts appreciated. I just think that my daughter isn't really getting any time with them because they're outside, but having them live inside isn't an option because of space and because she's allergic to the hay.

Thanks.

Kelly

Hi Kelly,

I can't see it being a problem to bring them in for cuddles and to have use of a run. I've been doing this for 2 years without a problem. Guineas don't like change in temp but it is getting warmer in the day now.

I know what you mean about not being able to enjoy them on the grass, I can't wait until I can put mine out again and watch them all day!

Thanks for that. What kind of run do you use for inside? I just wondered what sort of flooring you'd put down, etc.

Hi. Like you my 2 girls live in a hutch in our outhouse where I leave the door ajar during the day. I bring them in regular for cuddles and have an indoor run for them. This is my indoor run which folds away when not in use. They go in the kitchen where the floor is stone and the heating is switched off to avoid too much of a temperature change http://www.theguineapigforum.co.uk/showthread.php?t=142&page=6 I know what you mean about feeling guilty though. I would love mine to be indoors all the time but can't due to lace of space and OH being allergic to them.

I use grids available from screwfix as mesh cubes. Make one up in the living room for them to run around in. :)

I bought some cheap shower curtain material from the market and put that down covered by newspaper for my babies when thye're indoors.

mine live indoors but i use this as a run for them http://www.petsathome.com/find/keyword-is-hamster+pen/product-is-14041 i have 2 joined together and like Claire W they go in the kitchen on the laminate floor or in the living room with just a throw underneath.[/q

Thanks for the tip. I bought this one but just wondered if guinea pigs are able to jump out of it?! Have yours ever tried?

Nope they have never tried to jump out the bars are vertical so there is nothing to give them enough leverage to hop over!

My piggie is spoilt I bought the plan pen from P@h think it was about £30 but is it massive 1 meter squared.

I put a tarpoline on floor over carpet then the play pen I use a corner litter tray from p@h & we have only have one accident in the two weeks I have had the pen the rest of time he has weed in the litter tray. I also have a fleece at the none litter end which I got for £1.99 from B&M Bargains (it was truly a bargin as can be folded double for extra cosyness).

I bought one of those little plastic pigloo things from p@h and I thought I would put hay in it for them so they could snuggle up. Does that seem OK?

They have recently got in stock in tescos in store this collapsable run stuff called a "small rodent playpen". Their £5 each. i got 2 of them for my piggies as I'm really short on space and time as I'm at uni so when i come home i sometimes get it out for them to have some floor time and then it just folds away when they're back in their cage. I'm not sure how much longer tescos will have it in though. its in the seasonal isle where they've just changed it all to animal products.

Also when I'm at home i put them in a big kids swimming pool in the living room. Its one of those ridgid pools not an inflatable one so it doesnt burst if they nibble :) lol. They love that the best :D and it was only like 7 pounds! I out a blanket on the floor of it so they dont chew the plastic and then put out carboard boxes with hole in to adventure about in.

Hope i helped :)

hi
......just to let you know, i bought this for my 3 babies and yes.....Buster did manage to jump right over it! Luckily my daughters quick reflexes caught her!

I now use the grids tied together with cable ties, so its easy to store....and none of them have jumped out of this one.....yet!
