I joined the forum today because I need to find answers to what happened yesterday.

I had two males seperate from two females.

I have had the males since April 2010 and the two females since March 2008.

Around December 2010 one of the males got in with one of the females and overnight on February 13th/14th I got two bebies, one was female and one was male.

On Friday night all was fine, yesterday morning the mother of the two new guinea pigs got into next doors garden for the first time ever.

I got her out after about 10 minutes but I noticed she was breathing very quickly and this did not stop.

She would only eat a very little when I gave food to her and then I noticed some watery blood coming from her nose, she got worse and worse and then layed on one side with a lot of watery blood coming from her nose and died yesterday.

I am absolutely gutted and cannot believe all this has happened so quickly.

I did ring the vet yesterday afternoon, he said it sounded very serious and could have a look but it would be £95 and to be honest what could he have done as blood was coming from her nose at the time.

I think it was an upper respiratory infection but I don't know for certain.

The two youngest ones have lost their mother and I have a lost a wonderful guinea pig.

Has anyone heard of anything like this or what the problem was and what caused it.

Thanks for reading all this.

maybe there was some dog pee on the grass she ate? or maybe she ate a weed she shouldnt have?

Sorry to hear she died. rip little one.

I am so sorry about what has happened. We can only guess as well. My first though would be poisoning, too - fresh dog pee or or a poinsonous plant.

How old are your babies?

Thet are 6 weeks old overnight tonight and all the other guinea pigs I have seem fine today.

Next door do keep a dog although I don't know if its ever in their front garden where she went.

I am so gutted and still cannot believe it.

I have never had a guinea pig die like this and so quickly.

Its going to take a bit of getting over.

Also, one of my two babies is a male and he is still with his sister and a 3 year old female, I think he will have to be moved soon, I hope he will get on well with the other two year old males I have.

I did ask the vet yesterday about whether she might have eaten something, he mentioned foxglove but he said that was one of many things they should not eat.

Thanks for your replies.

I appreciate it.

The male pup if he's 6 weeks old has to be separated now. There's a high probability that his sisters are already pregnant with his babies! I have this problem with mis sexed piggies from my local pet shop, they had separated one definate girl but were unsure about the other so put it in with the definate male, result is of the 2 females, the one that was in with the male is pregnant!

Separate today please!

The boy should of been moved 3 weeks ago you probably have the two girls pregnany and the sister is far too young to be and really the other one is too old to have a first litter

Thanks you Glynis and all the other replies.

I seperated the young male yesterday and put him with the other two.

There was a lot of squeaking and sniffing but they all now seem ok with each other.

The two females seem ok as well.

I don't think either of them are pregnant because I had not seen the young male hassling them at all but I will tell you if they are.

I still fell very sad and I would still like to know exactly what the problem was, the more I think about it the more I think she ate something poisonous.

Thanks

Could a dog or cat have gotten her? Sometimes with internal injuries they could just have blood coming from their nose :(

So sorry you lost her :( that must have been so sad and such a shock, but it sounds like there was nothing more you could have done.

Hopefully none of your girls are pregnant, my friend is a breeder and she leaves her males in with the others for 4-6 weeks and none of them have ever gotten pregnant, and she's had guinea pigs for 15 years I think. (She just leaves smaller males til 6 weeks though.) Separating at 3 weeks is a precaution, because some 4 week old guinea pigs have fathered litters, but hopefully yours will be fine.
