A few minutes ago I was watching Doughnut's playpen from a distance as he munched on the lawn. An acer in the garden obstructed where Doughnut exactly was (his pigloo). Then I saw some sort of black fluffy predator (a cat I think) dash past the playpen carrying a very much Doughnut-coloured object. I rushed outside in a panic to find Doughnut still in his playpen absolutely fine, but I could still hear the predator eating whatever it had caught in the bush near the playpen.

I have put Doughnut safely in his hutch, with a handful of fresh grass, far away from the predator. I think it was a squirrel the predator had in its mouth. However now I am scared to put him on the lawn again. :(

Thanks for listening to my ranting.

Thank you. :)

I went outside a minute ago and I can still hear the cat (or whatever it was) eating its meal. I can't see it though, there's too much bush in the way.

Oh my goodness what a horrible experience i would be very shaken indeed. In good old British fashion a nice strong sweet cup of tea is always a good idea. Cute little piggy.

It is horrible when something like that happens, just a flash, caught in the corner of your eye....
Depends on the size Doughnut, but I doubt a cat would actually carry off a fully grown guniea pig. Squirrels bite back, so unless it was a very young one, probably not that either. Mouse, small rat or birds is most likely.

Thank you everyone! :)

@allcreaturesbigandsmall Thank you! Doughnut is actually the one in my avatar. See how squirrel-coloured he is?

Haha @NASH you've made me in the mood for a cuppa now, I think I will have one! :D

@Treacle You obviously haven't met my grandmother's cat, he brought in a squirrel once. In fact he even once brought in a pigeon! (it's a miracle he can even get that stuff through the cat flap...) The cat looked pretty big, either it was just a really big cat or it might have been something else. I'm not sure what else it could have been though. It was very shaggy and black, with a horse-like furry tail.

I suppose the squirrel could have been a younger squirrel, it was about as big as Doughnut. Doughnut is a very big guinea pig because he is a rex hybrid (more to cuddle!) though he is only 7 months old. Or perhaps it could have been one of those brown birds I often see.

Although Thomas cat is quite large, he is the biggest baby. Bird I can understand, but squirrels are nasty, I have had dogs injured by them, mind you, cats are better lone hunters, so maybe, especially if they have been taught to hunt, such as farm cats. My moggies are all domestic and just went from being with mummy to being owned and well fed, so they would not tackle a squirrel, in fact anything larger then a mouse! image.webpimage.webp

How frightening! Glad everything is ok!

Growing up we had a kitten who was a serious hunter, on his first outing into the garden he disappeared under the fence and dragged a bird back that was bigger than him, we think he found it. One year he found a nest of rabbits and brought the babies back one at a time - he was not in the good books that spring.:(

Well Treacle, my grandmother's cat spends a lot of time hunting outdoors, so he would be quite an experienced cat.

Thank you Lolly; that sounds like one naughty kitty!
