Feliway Cystease Dose

Hi everyone, I hope you and your piggies are well.
I have bought some Feliway cystease for my guinea pig, Gertie. I’m certain she has I.C.
What dose should I be giving to her?
She would probably prefer it sprinkled over food than diluted in a syringe.
Any advice greatly appreciated. Thank you 😊
 
When i was syringing it for my sow, who i think has i.c still. I done 1 capsule per 1ml of water. Daily.

What is your girl showing in symptoms? i would be interested to compare

I think you kindly replied to my last post back in April about Gertie and told me about your piggie ? - Gertie was on metacam and co-trimoxazole for 2weeks for bleeding from her bottom. It made no difference. She is still very occasionally having bright red blood on her bottom . I bought some urinalysis sticks - she still has blood in her urine but absolutely no other symptoms. She has had it a few times before over the past year and the vet has no idea what’s causing it. The next option will be to operate and look inside again, but I’m a bit reluctant as she is a really happy girl x

O yea i think i remember now. My sow ended up being diagnosed with a cervical tumour, she has had the op and it has been removed, i thought she had stopped having blood in her pee, but it has come back. So i think she has had i.c all along aswell. My vet did think this before the tumour was found.

I use a different type for Iggy but the same stuff probably! I’ve found it’s helped him, though he’s not completely devoid of painful wees they have reduced in frequency and severity so that’s a bonus!

It’s so hard when you don’t know what to do, I’m in the same boat. I think the next step for us is another ultrasound to check for stones again. I don’t particularly want him on metacam for the rest of his days but if it makes him comfortable I’m happy!
 
@Claire W knows alot about i.c too

Has the vet tried feeling for stones first?

Yea its probably best to get a scan done then. My sow doesnt squeak with i.c if it is that. Its just diluted pink urine and thats all

Luckily Iggy never has blood in his urine, sometimes a tiny amount of red blood cells to indicate inflammation but that’s just the IC I guess. Wish more could be done about it, it’s not nice to hear his squeaky wees.

Oh definitely haha here he is at this precise moment. It’s the little things in life! I’m sure we’ll get on top of it one day, I just wish the vets would come up with an answer instead of planning how to spend all the money I’m giving them :))

I wish i knew of a glucosomine liquid that guinea pig could have. Its all about keeping the bladder wall comfortable

I used that before going onto the cystassist. Still have the pot of them lol but it’s hard to grind up and it definitely wasn’t as successful as what we’re doing now but idk if that’s just us.

I think you need to let it mix with water for a few hours first . I have a mortar and pestle to grind it. Might be worth a go

Yea you’ve gotta mix it up first, I would mix it in the morning and start giving it in the evening after another thorough shake. I can’t remember how many days worth it did now. I just remember how difficult it was to get out all the lumps haha.

It’s so stressful isn’t it - especially when you hope it’s been sorted and it comes back.
The only reason I know there is still blood in her wee is when I used the ‘dip stick’ - her wee is not pink and she has never squealed. X

Yes, it is. However the fine powder in cat capsules is a lot easier to mix, even if you do so best a bit beforehand to allow to soak fully and always shake well again before syringing. In home ground mixtures, you need to steep longer after the initial shaking.

I find it more convenient to prepare the dosage for two days together in both cases and keep the small medicine bottle from a vet or a pharmacy in the fridge in the meantime.

I can't really add much to the great advise you have already been given. My Ellen has had IC for 3.5 years now. Thankfully for her, she no longer needs daily treatment unless she is having a flare but when she is having treatment, she has one feliway cystease tablet mixed with 1ml of water and 0.2ml of dog metacam or 0.4ml of cat metacam. Unless she is having a flare where she passes bloody urine and does the odd squeak whilst urinating, you wouldn't know unless you test her urine as she always has traces of blood in it.

But before IC is diagnosed, uti, bladder stones and reproductive problems in females should be ruled out.

I feed the IC diet which consists of pepper (all colours) cucumber, green beans, little gem lettuce and coriander. You can replace the lettuce with a slither of spring greens but I struggle to get hold of it. You can also a chunk of celery but my two don't like it.

They then get one tablespoon each of Harrington pellets daily and unlimited hay and water

I have genuinely only been able to find spring greens in either Tesco or Sainsburys. Which is great as long as you have a Tesco or Sainsburys nearby, not quite so much when you don't.

I was going to tag you in 👍. Dot defintly cant have any reproductive problems. So i think she has i.c, shes happy though. Just peeing pink still sometimes

I only have a small Tesco express and CoOp nearby and neither of them sell it. We shop in Aldi but they don’t sell it and the nearest big Tesco is Rochdale and he won’t go all he way there for spring greens. I used to work at Sainsburys but as they dismissed me after 12 years service, I’m not going there 😅
